Montreal - The Marauders may not have Cup Dreams this year, but they plan on providing some entertaining matches for their fans. In their first match at home, the underdog Marauders used some youthful exuberance to their advantage, notching a 10-4 win over Steeltown.
While the fans were very pleased to see a win, something that has been in short supply over the last year, they quickly latched onto the pursuit of the elusive Gordie Howe Hat Trick. Fan favorite Adam Deadmarsh got things going with an early fight against an unlikely opponent.
"I was backchecking and got a good piece of a guy during a scrum around the net, said Deadmarsh, "Then I got crosschecked. When I turned around, there he was, shaking off his gloves. I was stunned."
The 'he' in question was none other than noted GWHL pacifist Pavel Bure.
"I thought 'well I can hardly say no, I'd never hear the end of it'. So we went."
The bout was more wrestling than anything, as virtually no solid punches were landed before the get-together was disrupted by linesmen.
Stage Two of the Howe was accomplished in the second period when Deadmarsh scored on a pretty bang-bang play from Patrik Stefan and Sergei Samsonov. The goal sent Mike Dunham to the showers early.
"At that point, guys started telling me that I needed an assist to finish. Even the fans were into it, yelling at me as I walked out between periods."
Deadmarsh's chance came early in the final period, with the newly bellicose Bure off for goalie interference.
"It was a fairly cheesy assist, to be honest. I just fed the point man."
Deadmarsh's pass to the point was fired by Bryan McCabe and tipped in by Jeff Friesen in front of the net.
"Cheesy, but I'll take it," said Deadmarsh, "it's about as close as I'll get to Gordie in anything, I imagine. So, I'll take it."
