After struggling through the tail end of the regular season, losing their last 3 games, and miraculously clinching the last playoff spot by 1 point, there weren't alot of people, including Blades GM Neil Hayes who thought the Blades had much of a chance in the first round against top seeded powerhouse Edmonton.
"I always thought this team had the talent to win, but the way they were playing, I honestly thought we would be out in the first round. I was just happy to make the playoffs" commented GM Hayes.
Although the upset is a surprise, Hayes did revamp his team at the deadline, adding Scott Stevens, Scott Hartnell, Kenny Jonsson, Scott Walker, Jocelyn Thibault and Felix Potvin.
"I thought after the trades were made that this team would finally turn it around, but they didn't" Hayes said. The team actually played worse after the deadline than before. Luckily for Blades fans, the turnaround came at the right time.
Thanks to spectacular goaltending from new starter Jocelyn Thibault, and some timely scoring, the playoffs have the Blades undefeated and feeling confident about their chances against either Winnipeg or BC in the conference finals.
