Despite a disappointing .500 season, the Yellowknife Blades advanced to their first ever playoffs and have made the most of the opportunity. After sweeping top seeded Edmonton in round one, the Blades went on to play nemesis Winnipeg in round 2.
Despite getting off to a healthy 2-0 series lead, the Blades managed to lose 3 straight games and needed to win the last 2 games to advance. With Thibault back between the pipes after an unsuccessful venture with Potvin, the Blades squeaked out a win in game 6, forcing a game 7. Game 7 showed just how close Winnipeg and Yellowknife are. Both teams got some good goaltending, and game 7 came down to a deciding goal in overtime. Jiri Fischer of Winnipeg took an untimely penalty in overtime and Bonk made sure he made the most of the oppotunity. 6 minutes into sudden death, Bonk became the hero for the Blades, sliding a rebound in past a sprawling Turek.
The GWHL finals should be a great matchup against the returning champion Harpoons. Although the Harpoons have a fantastic team, and the Blades may be exhausted after a 7 game series, GM Hayes has hope for the Blades.
"I think this playoffs has proved to everyone that Yellowknife can beat anyone if we play our game".
Halifax is sporting a couple of key injuries to top centre Joe Thornton, as well as a serious injury to defenseman Keith Carney, which will put him out for the rest of the playoffs. Halifax will have to rely on their depth to beat Yellowknife.
Will Yellowknife's cindarella season end now, or will they take home their first ever cup? This series will be an exciting one, either way.
