The surprise underdog team that beat the top rated team in the West in the first round, and the 3rd seeded team in the 2nd round, has just accomplished the shocking. That's right, the Yellowknife Blades, which just scraped into the playoffs by 1 point after losing their final 3 games, has beaten the GWHL perennial powerhouse team, the Halifax Harpoons. The Blades needed 7 games to dispose of the Harpoons, and can thank team captain Mike Modano for the cup. Modano had 10 goals and 17 assists in 18 playoff games and is easily the playoff MVP.
The Blades capitalized on a tired Sean Burke early and won game 7 by a score of 5-2 thanks to 2 goals from Modano. The Blades also got good goaltending, something that was missing in the regular season for them. Initially, Thibault won himself the starting job against Edmonton, but faltered in round 2 and eventually lost his job to Potvin. Potvin took command after being given the reigns, and finished with an exceptional save percentage and GAA.
The Yellowknife community is planning a parade for the Blades tomorrow.
