(EDMONTON)-The kids are alright. That was the theme of last night's match of second place teams in Edmonton. With Zigmund Palffy and Brian Leetch watching from the pressbox and Jeff O'Neill nursing a sore shoulder, youngsters Joe Thornton and Ilya Kovalchuk took it upon themselves to carry the Harpoons to victory.

Playing on the same line with old hand Peter Bondra, Thornton tallied a goal and three assists while Kovalchuk in just his third GWHL game chipped in with a goal and two helpers. The 'Poons struck quickly building a 5-1 lead in the first period with goals from O'Neill (two), Vladimir Malakhov, the aforementioned Kovalchuk, and Rob Blake. After Blake's goal it was lights out for Edmonton starting netminder Ron Tugnutt, as Kevin Weekes was inserted in his place. Malakhov and Shawn Bates added markers in the second period before Bret Hedican and Joe Thornton traded goals in the third. Joe Juneau also tallied for Edmonton.

"I'd better heal up quick," commented Ziggy Palffy after watching Kovalchuk work his magic in the game. "There might not be a spot for me if I'm out for too much longer the way Ilya played tonight."

"I'm just happy to contribute in some way," replied the rookie. "Besides it's easy to score when you get passes like I was getting."

"I've been waiting for a game like this," spoke Joe Thornton afterwards. "I felt I hadn't been contributing the way I can but it all came together for me tonight."
