The good news is that the Saskatoon Silos are playing above-.500 hockey. The bad news is that the Silos still haven't hit upon a winning formula, as evidenced by their second straight tie, a wild 7-7 affair against the B.C. Huskies.
In spite of having peppered opposing goalies with 74 shots in two games, Saskatoon has only managed to take two points in the standings in the GWHL's ultra-competitive Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Silos' goaltenders had few answers against the high-powered B.C. offense, with starter Jocelyn Thibault and reliever Nik Khabibulin stopping just 24 of 31 shots.
In spite of the ties, the Silos slowly seem to be shaking out of the funk that surrounded the team through the first quarter of the schedule. They have lost just 1 of their last 6 games, picking up 8 of a possible 12 points. They are just 3 points behind Edmonton in the race for the final playoff spot, although jumping over them will be easier said than done.
In the game against the Huskies, 15 different Saskatoon players registered points, with Janne Niinimaa leading the way with 3 assists. Theo Fleury and Robert Lang were named the game's 2nd and 3rd stars, respectively, while Luc Robitaille of B.C. netted a hat trick to earn the game's 1st star award.
"From the fans standpoint, it was a great game to watch", said Silos' coach Bob Hartley. "For the coaches, it's a nightmare. But, overall, the team is coming around, especially the offense, so we just need to keep the goals-against down, and I think we'll be alright."
Silo Siftings- new Silo John LeClair has put 9 shots on goal in his 2 games for Saskatoon, but has just 1 assist to show for his efforts. "John's a goal-scorer", said Hartley. "The goals will come in time, hopefully soon."...There are still rumblings that Saskatoon might be looking to make yet another deal, possibly for a defenseman, but there was no acknowledgement of this from Silos' GM Ken McKenna.
