You would think that after having made 17 trades since the end of the 2002 season, Saskatoon GM Ken McKenna would be tired of making deals. And, with that many trades having been made, you would think that another deal would be met with a yawn by most fans.
Instead, "Trader McK" lived up to his nickname once again, pulling perhaps his most surprising trade of the season. Going to the B.C. Huskies is goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, who was thought to be a player that the Silos would build around for the near future.
Coming to Saskatoon from B.C. is goaltender Curtis Joseph, another well-regarded, though older, backstop. Joseph comes with a hefty $9,000,000 price tag, but the Silos will be able to fit him under the salary cap with some room to spare.
While there is surprise being expressed in many quarters regarding this move, both GM McKenna and coach Bob Hartley were having a hard time disguising their disappointment with the play of Khabibulin. The agile Russian had been pulled in several games, and is thought by some to be the main reason for Saskatoon's mediocre record.
"Nik has played a lot of great hockey for us, but this hasn't been one of his better seasons", stated the busy GM. "Maybe he needed a fresh start elsewhere."
Joseph may not see action immediately for the Silos, however. "Curtis is a little nicked up at the moment", said coach Hartley, "so we may have to go with Jocelyn in the next couple of games."
Overall, the coach seemed pleased with the acquisition of the man known as "Cujo".
"Curtis is certainly one of the top goaltenders in the league, so of course I'm happy to have him on our squad", smiled the coach. "I have nothing but good things to say about Nik, and wish him the best with B.C.- just not against us though!"
