(HALIFAX)-For the fourth time in four weeks the Halifax Harpoons have dipped into the GWHL trading waters this time with divisional rival Montreal Marauders. In a set of negotiations that went on overnight Thursday after first approaching Montreal GM Sean Gallagher Wednesday, the Harpoons parted with minor league star Patrick Marleau. Marleau, presently 4th in GWMHL scoring with 26 goals and 24 assists had been seen by some as the heir apparent to Ron Francis, but alas that will not be now. Coming over from Montreal is a package of draft picks, two first rounders, in 2006 and 2009 to be precise.

"We may well be criticized for this deal in the media but we felt this was the best time to move Marleau," explained GM Stephen J. Holodinsky. "He was a good kid, but in the end this is a business. Every asset, of which is was one, has a value. We felt that his value was 2 first round picks and when we found a partner willing to pay that price for him, we moved him. It's a cold way of looking at things but it is also a realistic way of looking at things. We feel that Vaclav Prospal and Kip Miller can step uo and take his place for the Clippers and this move gives us a couple of real solid shots at quality youngsters in the future."

In an untrelated note the Harpoons called up LW Ilya Kovalchuk for the third time this year to fill in for the injured Marian Hossa. In 13 games with the big club, Kovalchuk has 4 goals and 5 assists and is +5. Hossa will travel with the team to Whitehorse and will be a game time decision.
