Montreal, QB - Despite all the moves, the Marauders are still in the basement. Which is exactly what their new GM predicted.
"Anyone who thought I was going to trade for immediate upgrades missed my message," said GM Sean Gallagher, "this is a long-term plan. The recent moves prove that."
As reported in Halifax, Montreal moved two 1st round picks for Patrick Marleau just yesterday.
"Marleau has shown flashes of what he can become," said Gallagher, "he hasn't been consistently good yet, so we hope he can really break out. He's definitely exciting though."
Rumors indicate that another, nine-player deal followed closely on the heels of the Marleau trade, sending away Tomas Holmstrom, Vaclav Varada, Roman Cechmanek, Jan Hrdina and Michael Renberg for Manny Malhotra, Tim Connolly, JP Dumont, and Manny Fernandez. Gallagher would only comment in general, as the trade had not been officially registered by the league due to a jammed fax machine in Montreal.
"Again, if we made such a trade, it would fit the mold - trading for risky players with upside."
The move makes Pierre Turgeon the most-watched player in Montreal, as many people think he'll be next to go. The club is likely to move the playmaker prior to the deadline if youth or picks can be acquired for him.
"With our recent acquisitions at center, I think we have some options to move him for good picks," said Gallagher, "if the right deal is there, he'll be moved. If the right deal isn't there, we'll just hold on to him and try again during the offseason."
Regardless of the Turgeon situation, it seems that more moves are to come in Montreal, as the new GM tries to make his mark on his team.
