Subject: Silos Complete Trade With B.C.

In a somewhat surprising move, Saskatoon Silos' GM Ken McKenna completed a trade with the B.C. Huskies that brings center Alexei Zhamnov and an '04 2nd round pick to the Silos. Going to B.C. are defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky, left wing Jan Hlavac and prospect Mikhail Kuleshov.

The move was surprising in that Saskatoon already has Alexei Yashin, Robert Lang and Martin Straka to generate offense from the center position. Rather than being a move to create some depth, however, McKenna indicated that this trade may be more about giving his club some insurance against losses in free agency.

"We could lose a player or two in free agency", said the GM, "so acquiring Zhamnov might leave us with some options in case of such an occurance."

The Silos parted with three younger players, including their top +/- player last season. Visnovsky was +27 for the 2002 season, and was a productive player on Saskatoon's power play unit. With the presence of Janne Niinimaa and Eric Desjardins, however, the power play would appear to be in good hands for the short term. The acquisitions of Derian Hatcher and Robyn Regehr also leave the Silos with plenty of depth at defense.

The GM hinted that the re-shaping of the Silos' lineup is likely to continue. "I've talked to a couple of other GMs, but nothing has come from those talks. The free agent derby is coming up, as well, so we'll see what happens there."
