Saskatoon Silos GM Ken McKenna wasted little time in making another trade follwing the recent acquisition of Alexei Zhamnov, with the GM completing a trade with the Toronto Trojans that brings speedy RW Pavel Bure to Saskatoon. In return, the Silos sent RWs Radek Dvorak and David Vyborny to the Trojans.

The deal does not come without some strings attached, however, since Bure is a restricted free agent who could draw some attention in the upcoming free agency period. The Trojans made a qualifying offer of $10,401,300 per season for 3 seasons, which the Silos would assume should Bure remain property of the team. Even if Bure should move on, however, GM McKenna doesn't see it as a bad thing, necessarily.

"We, of course, would love to have Pavel in our lineup", smiled the GM. "Bure could be the sniper that this team lacked last season, and he would certainly look good lined up with Lex (Yashin), and possibly Straka, on our first line." There does appear to be some interest from other GWHL teams, so McKenna is only cautiously optimistic.

"I can't imagine what kind of offer another team would make, but the worst case scenario is that we would end up with four 1st round picks should we lose Pavel." Wouldn't losing Bure leave a couple of holes in the lineup? "Not necessarily, since we could be active in free agency", winked the GM.

Staying under the league salary cap will be a problem with the addition of Bure, and will be even more of a problem if the Silos add a free agent or two. For his part, the GM didn't seem all that concerned with this fact, stating "we'll cross that bridge if we come to it".

The Silos trade away a solid, 2nd-line right wing in Dvorak, and a promising young right wing in Vyborny. "We had originally intended to bring Vyborny up to the big club this year, and we'll certainly miss Radek's combination of offensive and defensive ability" said McKenna. "But having Pavel will certainly give us one of the most dangerous 1st lines in the league, and will help put some fannies in the seats".

So, with the acquisition of Bure and free agency coming up, does this mean that the GM is done making deals? "Not likely", grinned the GM.
