Subject: Totems revamp lineup

After a disappointing loss in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals, resulting in the Totems not making the GWHL finals for the first time in league history, it was obvious that some changes would be in order.

First of all, Scotty Bowman steped down from behind the bench to accept a postion in Victoria's front office. Then GM Shawn Macdonald remained curiously muted while evaluating what needed to be done with the team.

With free agency still on the horizon it reamins to be seen what the Totems will look like at the start of the season, but two deals, one pre-draft and one last night, should significantly alter the look of the team.

The first deal saw the Totems deal their first and third rounders in this year's draft for young playmaker Scott Gomez. New head coach Mike Keenan was on hand to comment that he liked the playmaking aspect that Gomez brought to the table but that it was unlikely he would see musc more than third or fourth line duty for the next season.

The second deal, however, will likely have a much more immediate impact. That deal saw last years scoring leader VIncent Damphousse packaged with Calle Johansson to Whitehorse. In return the Totems get young blueline stud Eric Brewer and playmaking centre Andrew Cassels. This deal should alter the look of the Totems significantly, giving them the young blueline anchor that Macdonald has been known to have been searching for recently.

Will this make the Totems a stronger squad for the upcoming season? Only time will tell....
