Subject: Silos Make More Moves

In an off-season that has become the busiest in Saskatoon Silos' history, Silos' GM Ken McKenna has made a couple more trades that further re-shape the Saskatoon lineup.

The first, and somewhat surprising, deal was completed with the Steeltown Hammers. Moving over to Steeltown are RW Pavel Bure, D Derian Hatcher and C Kris Beech, as well as some cash. In return, Saskatoon acquired LW Brendan Shanahan, D Don Sweeney, LW Jarkko Ruutu and D Niclas Wallin.

A second deal then went down with the Quebec Remparts, which saw C Martin Straka move over to Quebec in exchange for RW Mark Recchi.

There was little doubt that the trade with Steeltown had very much to do with reducing salary, a notion that McKenna did not deny. "I think it would have been tough for the club to make money with the salary structue we had", nodded the Silos' GM. "We hate to lose players the caliber of Pavel, Derian and Kris, but we are getting back a very good player in Brendan, plus some veteran defensive help in Sweeney". The GM also indicated that the presence of four good, young center prospects made Beech expendable.

The second deal adds back a little more salary, but helps to balance out the roster a bit better. "Marty has been a very good player for us, but we've added a pretty good player in Recchi who can fill the hole left by trading Bure", said the very busy GM. "We'd like to play Lang at center full-time, so that made Straks expendable".

As has been asked many times in this off-seaon, is the GM done making deals? McKenna just shrugged his shoulders, saying "beats me!".
