With the off-season refurbishing of the Saskatoon Silos' lineup nearly completed, Silos' GM Ken McKenna is openly seeking a center to work on the fourth line, as well as the second penalty-killing unit.
"It would be a good thing if we could find someone to plug in between Jarkko and Kelly", said the trade-happy GM. "We're not looking for a highly skilled player, though, so we aren't going to pay a big price to fill this spot. We have people we can plug into this position, if necessary."
The Silos recently signed free agent Mike Knuble, who will add some depth at RW. The team is also said to be in talks with a few other free agents, possibly even a couple players who were in the organization last season, but the GM had no comment on those reports.
Silos Notes: Saskatoon opens their 2003 preseason against a division rival, the Edmonton Eagles. Silos' coach Bob Hartley is anxious to see how his team will look against outside competition. "We've had a good camp, with some of the new talent looking as if they'll fit right in", said the coach. "It was disappointing not to be able to keep players like Straks, Bure and Hatcher, but some of the players we received in return, like Shanny and Recchi, should help us to be more consistent offensively this season."...It is expected that some players from last year's Prince Albert club will get a long look in the preseason. RW Tommy Westlund and D Pascal Trepanier have been solid so far in camp, and they will most likely be in the lineup for the first couple of preseason games. "Both players can provide us with some solid defensive depth", said coach Hartley, "with Treps having a bit of offensive ability which could help on the power play."
