(HALIFAX)-After a disappointing 5-1 loss at the hands of the Charlottetown Islanders, Halifax Head coach was looking for a better effort from his charges as the Ottawa Oaks came to town. Boy did he ever get his wish. In a game that was never close in terms of play the Harpoons thumped the Oaks 9-1.

While the trio of Marian Hossa, Eric Lindros, and Milan Hejduk concentrated on shutting down the Oaks top line of Jason Allison, Alexander Mogilny, and Patrick Poulin, the second and third lines feasted on the rest of the Ottawa lineup. So dominant were they that newcomer Joe Thornton, who became the first player in Harpoons history to record a natural hattrick, was only good enough to get the games third star. Linemate Peter Bondra with 2 goals and 2 assists garnered the games second star, and training camp discovery Shawn Bates, who spent last year in Dartmouth, was the games first star with 2 goals and 3 helpers. Other Halifax goals were scored by Vladimir Malakhov, back after a lengthy absence due to knee problems and Veteran Ron Francis centering a 3rd line of Bates and Jeff O'Neill. Jason Allison netted the only goal for Ottawa as Sean Burke turned aside 15 of 16 shots.

"While it is only the pre-season, I've got to say I'm very happy with the effort we put forth tonight," commented Coach Andy Murray after the game. "The goal output was nice, but the fact that we were able to limit a team like Ottawa to 16 shots stands out in my mind as the big accomplishment in this game."
