In a move that had been openly mentioned by Saskatoon GM Ken McKenna earlier in the day, the Silos acquired the player who will fill their fourth center slot.
Coming to Saskatoon from the Charlottetown Islanders is veteran center/left wing Stu Barnes. In return, the Islanders receive defenseman Paul Laus, as well as future considerations, which is said to be cash.
By acquiring Barnes, the Silos have added depth at one position, but moving Laus will hurt the defensive ability of their rearguard contingent. "Paul was a feisty player for us", said coach Bob Hartley, "but he was also rock-solid behind the blueline. We're not exactly sure how we'll replace his veteran savvy, but some of the younger d-men will have to step up."
For his part, the Silos' GM seemed aware that his latest move may have weakened one aspect of his team. "Paul was a gamer for us, and a fan favorite", said McKenna. "Stu should give us some offensive depth at center, as well as someone to center the 2nd PK unit. I think he could also become a fan favorite, as he has been wherever he has played."
And so, for seemingly the umpteenth time this off-season, the Saskatoon GM was asked if this was the final trade, the last piece to the puzzle. "Nah, you're always looking", laughed the GM. "I'd like to see what our defense does over the next few exhibition games; we might need to do something there."
Silos Shorts: The Silos opened the '03 preseason with a 2-1 victory over Edmonton. Martin Gelinas and newcomer Mark Recchi did the scoring, while Jocelyn Thibault stopped 23 of 24 shots. Eagles goaltender Kevin Weekes stopped 34 of 36 shots to keep the score close...Saskatoon fans will get their first look at the new players in their lineup, with London coming to town to provide the opposition.
