It is a good thing the players on the Saskatoon Silos have names on the backs of their jerseys; with all the comings and goings in this off-season, that is the only way the players will be able to remember each other's names.
Just as Saskatoon fans and players were getting used to newly acquired center Stu Barnes, Saskatoon GM Ken McKenna completed still another deal, which sent Barnes packing for the B.C. Huskies. Also going to B.C. in the deal was promising young defenseman Robyn Regehr, who was also acquired by Saskatoon earlier in this off-season.
In return for Barnes and Regehr, the Huskies sent defensemen Karlis Skrastins and Lubomir Visnovsky, as well as center Per Svartvadet, to Saskatoon. Visnovsky returns to the Silos after having been traded by the club earlier in the off-season.
Although the GM was disappointed at having to give up Regehr, he seemed to be happy with the trade, overall. "Robyn will be a solid defensive d-man in this league for many years to come", said the Silos' GM, "but we had to give up something to get a decent return. Barnes was more player than we needed for the limited role he was going to have for this team, with Per being able to fill that role at a lower cost. Karlis can help fill the hole left on defense by the Laus trade, while Lubes is a familiar face, and a contributor on the power play unit."
In addition to this trade, the Silos have also signed four free agents, including another familiar face. Signed were defenseman James Patrick and Alex Khavanov, center Chris Herperger, and right wing Mike Knuble. Patrick played for Saskatoon's farm team last season. "These guys provide some depth for the organization", said McKenna. "Patrick will get a look with the big club during the preseason, but the others will be in PA".
Silos Notes: Saskatoon currently sports a 3-1-0 record in the preseason, with a home-and-home set with Winnipeg upcoming. Newcomer Theo Fleury leads the team in points with 5 in 4 games...The best statistic of the preseason so far is the 94.1% PK figure, which is an area that coach Bob Hartley was looking to improve. The PP is also operating well, at a 40% clip that ties them for the best in the league...The team's lone loss, a 6-1 thumping by division rival Calgary, clearly didn't sit well with the team. "Those guys seem to have our number", said a disappointed Eric Desjardins. "They didn't even use their best lineup, and they still whipped us pretty good. They aren't the champs for nothing, I guess, so we'll need to beat them if we want to get anywhere this season."
