I recently decided to purchase a small, inexpensive welder just to get my feet wet and start learning to weld. Everything I have read indicates that wire feed welding is easier to learn, but I decided on a stick welder for one reason.

Because I'm on a fixed income and don't have much money to spend on a hobby, I want to keep my initial investment low. I decided on a stick welder because, although mig and flux core machines are also available cheap, I worry that a cheap wire feed welder would be prone to problems with the added mechanical feed system, especially with low cost, import equipment.

Granted, I an NOT a welder (yet), but I do have a background in manufacturing, so I feel that a simpler machine is probably more robust for the money. I also feel that if I can learn to stick weld, I should have few problems crossing over to a wire welder in the future (I hope).

I welcome any comments from experienced welders on this subject.
