Acetylene tanks contain acetone, in which acetylene gas is dissolved. As the acetylene gas is used during the welding process, more of it is released from the acetone. It is not advisable to weld with your acetylene tank in a horizontal position - as liquid acetone may flow out of the tank and into your torch. If you did that, I suppose, you'd be performing oxy-acetone welding - unless you have a flaming inferno before you even start to weld!

Oxygen tanks can be kept in the vertical or horizontal position while welding as they only contain oxygen gas under great pressure.
