I agree with your assessment of Kohlberg's theory and that a person can be cognitively competent but be morally immature. I also agree about the cultural and gender differences cregarding his theory. I also believe that the theory was not developed using a cross section of socioeconomic groups, races, religons, and other factors that could make a real difference to his findings.

After reading your remarks, I had an "ah-ha" moment. Although I didn't relate it in my response, I totally agree that anything based on Fraud's findings should be carefully scrutinized. However, Erikson seems to have gotten past much of Fraud's sexism. His stages ring truer to me in that they are more real and can be clearly recognized. His theory also leaves room for hope and growth because if a person was negatively impacted during one or more of the stages, it can be revisited and revised so that that person can have a happier, mentally healthier life.

BTW - congratulations on your engagement and may you always grow together.
