I think it was interesting how you compared the different classroom management styles. There are certainly effective teachers on both ends of the spectrum (i.e. yelling vs. more calm discipline). I think one thing that may be more important than the loudness or manner of intervention is the teacher's willingness to followup on those threats. I always heard from other teachers to "mean what you say" thus, if you have a teacher making empty threats, the kids will pick up on that tendency. I would imagine with the teacher who started simply writing names down that she followed through with her discipline on most occasions. Although yelling might work at first, I have seen teachers who were ignored despite yelling their heads off.
