Assignment 4 (Kohlberg vs Erikson): June 31
This posting has several parts:
1) What do you like and dislike about Kohlberg's theory of moral development? What is it in this theory that speaks to you personally? In which stage of moral development would you place yourself? Why?
2) What do you like and dislike about Erikson's theory of self development? What is it in this theory that speaks to you personally? In which crisis to you find yourself? Why?
3) Of the two theories, which is most relevant to your career/ major/life? Why? How would you use these theories?

I agree with kelly like her I have worked with a youth group and eriksons stages of development are vial in there developemnt. AS well as adults. moral deve. is important in life as well. And it is important for counselors in training such ss myself.

1Kohlbergs theory I like the fact that Kolhberg believed that moral reasoning is the basis for ethical behavior. I real like that Khlhberg was concerned with justice and how an individual justifies his actions. For example the classic Heinz dilima. However, there are a lot of current dilima's current ethical concerns that are critical in society now. Examples are the don't tell don't ask in the armed forces, Inclusion for all individuals in society, rasons why individuals or groups want accept certan groups or people, gay marraige is a huge debate. What I dislike about the theory is that it does not give guidelines on how to solve the dilima's. This theory speaks to my personality in that I am serious about morals and I am always exaiming self to insure that I have what I consider good moral judgement. explination I am a heterosexual woman however, with the big debate over gay marriage and letting gays in the armed forces as well as their rights to have children. Within the profession of counseling being a effective counselor intails being able to effectively counsel your clients no matter who they are without being bias and imposing your moral views on them. I was born with a disablity so I know what it feels like to always be fighting for acceptance and approval. I am in post convventainal stage of social contract orientation and the universal ethical principle I am in these stages because I am unique and I do consider the worlds view and ideas about life but more importantly I view what I believe and know about myself more. I am unique and is driven by a higher power.This theory speaks alot to my pesonality because I as mentioned eariler I am in continues structue building of my character and moral beliefs.

2.Erik E. In the psychosoial deve. stages I like the idea that Erikson explained the importance of social experience throughout an individuals life. I also like the Idea that the stages stress the development of ego.In addition I like the idea that Erikson explains that if an individual has the proper support they willl succsefully move on to the next stage and build a strong sense of self. For example, in trust vs. mistrust the infant is depending on the caregiver/mother and if don't have that support then the infant will develope a neg which is fear. However, I don't like that Erikson did not go into depth about how to resolve all conflicts that may arise in each stage of development. I am in the Intimacy vs. Isolation stage. I am in graduate school working on my degree and career. I am in a nice personal relationship and will be married soon and I am working on professional relationships as well.
3. Kolhbergs theory on moral development and Eriksons psychosocial theory both have equal importance to me. First, Kolhberg stress the importance of moral development and that is so true in the world in general and spritually as well as in my profession being a effective rehab.counselor. By knowing and effectively using the code of ethics I will not harm a client and I will not break any laws causing me to be sued. In addition, this will aid in my personal and spiritual life as well.Erikson, I can remember going through the adolesece stage of confussion and tring to figure out who I am. I can recall in kindergarden still exploring the world around me. These stages are vital in everyones personality and deve. It is important for counselors/counselors in training such as myself to know and understand these stages to assist clients that maybe in a conflit and having trouble succsefully moving to the next stage of development.
