I can truly identify with the very issues you were having with one of your students. I tried a similar approach and achieved similar results with many of my students who were previously behavioral problems. It took me a little while to develop a successful rewards/consequences type system but eventually I got it together. As a teacher, you definetly have to monitor student behavior to see what motivates them and what they like. One key motivator I've noticed is food...not necessarily candy..but things such as offering to bring breakfast or whatever. Many kids come to school primarily because don't get the 3 meals a day they need at home. Once you figure out the things that make your students tick, you can succesfully incorporate that into a rewards system just as you did.
