That makes sense, thanks. I'm just slow, I guess, or maybe I need more that one hour of sleep every night. Anyway, I've noticed something else. The X fandom is not the only one that behaves this way. For example, I once said on a Buffy message board that I liked Xander better than Spike. It was not pretty. Anyway, it seems like fandoms where the majority of the fans are female tend to react in the way you originally described. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I nuts?
