As people are saying below, Kotori died in order to save the earth, deciding that she would be the one to shatter instead of it. But nowhere that I can recall does it say she died to save mankind. In fact, it is the DoE that are trying to save the 'earth' by destroying mankind.

Are we supposed to assume that what Kotori meant was to save the people of the world, or were her dreams literal, and the thing she broke to avoid was, in fact, just the world? Perhaps Kotori's death sealed the DoE's victory.

That'd be a fitting plot twist, in my opinion. I'd love to see them do it.
