I'd always just assumed they were carved because Muraki had a knife with him when he was killing the person that Hisoka witnessed murdered. *shrugs* And it says in several translations that the marks were carved into him. But I could be wrong as we never actually see him do it. But yeah, not looking for an argument about this, and it's off-topic, so moving on...
