Now, I like to think that I've been one of the most tolerant, hands-free list-mommies around simply because I have faith that the contributors here are adult enough not to get into a slinging fest. Recent events, however, have given me a little cause for concern.
Firstly, I want everyone to understand that having a civilised discussion does not equate to happy trippy posts where everyone either has to agree or keep silent. I don't want that. This board may be coloured pink, but I never intended it to be all fluffy and nice either.
In fact, it is perfectly possible to have assertiveness in a civilised discussion, especially when the topic is a little controversial. Sarcasms and ironies are fine if they are there to prove a point. But personal attacks are out.
For examples, let's say A suggests that Fuuma is straight and in love with Kotori. It's alright if a disagreeing B replies sarcastically, "Oh, and I suppose Kamui is a girl then", and then proceeds to list out evidence from the manga where Fuuma is molesting Kamui. But it becomes a personal attack if B had instead wrote, "You idiot, your grammar is all wrong. Fuuma and Kamui forever!"
Secondly, not everyone comes from an English-speaking background. We are not writing fanfics here. So please refrain from criticising someone else's English, be it about spelling or grammar. How would one feel if a Chinese speaker were to criticse one's weak command of their language should one try to post on their board (assuming one knows some Chinese in the first place)? It smacks of racist elitism.
So, go ahead and have a lively, heated discussion, full of witticisms and sarcasm. You don't have to be nice, but you don't have to be downright nasty either. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If one believes that Subaru has been sleeping with every single male character in X, so be it. But do not expect everyone else to be converted to your view. It would, however, be helpful to provide some supporting evidence from the manga to strengthen whatever argument one is trying to make, not just from one's own beliefs. On the other hand, everyone should try to read and reread the opposite's argument with a calm and non-defensive mind before responding. Understand what your opponents are trying to tell you. Their messages may not be as inflammatory and irrational as one might have first thought. Unfortunately, we are very often so caught up in our own arguments and beliefs that we cannot admit anything from the other's perspectives, no matter how rational and logical they may be.
Incidentally, it's quite easy to say that just because CLAMP didn't draw something doesn't mean that something didn't happen. But this argument proves nothing, because your opponents could just as easily use your same argument to argue the very opposite. For example, I think that someone posted that Seishirou may have slept with Subaru even though CLAMP didn't draw anything about it. I could just as easily argued that Seishirou may have an erectile dysfunctional disorder even though CLAMP didn't draw him visiting the clinic about it. I even wrote a fic about it, but that doesn't make it true (or false). It's simply a meaningless point. In fact, there's more evidence from the manga that suggested that nothing happened between Subaru and Seishirou, which should not be readily dismissed.
