Hello,

A baby will not need more than 6 hours sleep, twice a day. I don't think there is a way to make them sleep longer.

A child can stay in the crib while awake if all needs are satisfied. Toddlers can play with toys for hours if they are satisfied, without your company. You can actually place the toddler on your bedroom floor with a couple skill building toys and sleep for a few extra hours while it plays.

I would recommend you to follow the baby's sleep rhythm, rather than trying to change the baby's rhythm in order to fit with your general day/night routin. It will be temporary and it will need special attention, but still save you from frustrations. I know some parents go to bed when their baby or toddler goes to sleep, then they all get some good sleep for 6 hours. In other words, the day is a 12 hrs day instead of a 24 hrs day. Depending on the parents work out of the house, this can work pretty well. Of course it would be ok if just one parent follow the baby's rhythm.

Good luck!
