Hi Mama Hicks
It's normal that a kid drops one grade if staying home from school one day. Home schooling is fine, but the kid must study intensively.
Plaing chess will not improve school grade directly, in the old world the kid must study, in the modern world they must do homework.
If your kid already has an F, I would not experiment with home schooling quite yet. Make her go to school long enough to climb a couple grades, then you can try keeping her home one day to study, and see how it affects her grade.
