Subject: Metacognition

I can remember when I was about 12 years old and I would go into deep thought. I would find myself sitting back thinking about why I was thinking what I was. It was rush for me and I was so amazed at the thought process that I was participating in. It was not until high school when I found out that this process was called metacognition.

>Being that I am a "student for life", I have found that metacognition is a really important part of getting the most out of education. It's very adaptive for students to understand how they think, because it directly relates to how they learn. Having an awareness of the learning strategies that work best makes learning of material much more effecient and productive, which allows the student to take on a greater amount of input. I think teachers should begin to teach metacognitive strategies early on in education. This might eliminate some of the frustration that students sometimes experience when they are unable to retain what they are taught.
