Subject: Piaget's Stages

I am so fascinated with Piaget's preoperational stage that occurs between ages two and six when a child learns to use language. I think this is when children are most creative. In this stage, they will turn anything into something. My son use to turn a toilet paper roll into a bullhorn or a comb into a microphone. Also, I love a child's energy at this stage. They are so busy and so alive.

I agree that creativity blooms during this age in a childs life. This is the stage in growing up when children learn about their surroundings and try to explore the world. I also think it is very amusing how children will come up with different ways to use an object for things that it is not typically used for. I is amazing what is going on in the minds of young children and in how they see the world. I think this stage is one of the most important, if not the most important in a child's life because the rest of their life builds from this stage.

>I was actually thinking about how alert my 3-month old is and how she is so bubbly. It doensn't take much for her to smile and laugh and she's always doing something with her hands (looking at them, waving them, pointing a finger). And all the while, I am wondering what she is thinking and trying to figure out. When I look at the stage of development for her age group, it amazes me that I can actually witness some of the levels of development taking place.

I agree, children in the preoperational stage have an amazing imagination. I have a neice who is 2 years old and a nephew who is 2 1/2 and it's very amusing to see the things they come up with. My nephew demonstrates the belief in animism at times (the belief that inanimate objects have a life of their own) so he thinks his stuffed animal can talk. And often times adults forget that they have egocentrism at this stage, they can't take another persons point of view. Sometimes adults will try to explain to the child why a behavior is innapropriate by talking about other's feelings and the child can't grasp this concept so it's important to remember appropriate ways of dealing with behavior issues for each age group.
