Subject: Obesity! Sleeping Giant
While reading chapter 15, I was stunned to find that the United States ranked so poorly in terms of adolescent health. Our youth seem to eat more junk and exercise far less than most countries. I understand that most of our society equates body size with wealth, but this is really, “putting your money where your mouth is” (corny I know). Seriously, as I look at our society, I have thoughts of high school cafeteria menus. I see different forms of media, advertising high cholesterol. I look back at the increase in sedentary activity (video game playing, TV watching, internet). I see increased belt sizes along with decreased exercise routines. After all of this, I realize that even though I am not obese I am heading down the path of the unhealthy.

It is so true in the United States of America and especially in the South. I was not an obese adolescent, weight found me as an adult. However, while working for corporate America and travelling globally. I found out that clothes sizes in Europe and Asia were grossly different: a Large was size 14 in the US. Also, you have to walk so far every where you go. Parking close is just not heard of in Europe and Asia, while in the US we always want the closet parking space. Physical Exercise was mandatory when I was young, all girls and boys had to dressout at least two to three times per week. America is always looking for faster, better cheaper, causing us to lose our youth to old age diseases: diabetes and heart disease rapidly growing in adolescents.

I agree with you Bryan. But I was not surprised after reading Chapter 15 about the United States. But if you look into memphis city schools today, (I don't know about Shelby County schools), you'll find where they have replaced the "good snacks" such as cookies, rice krispy treats, cakes, etc. for "healthy" snacks such as pretzles, low-fat ice cream or yogurt, or some type of grain donut. In some schools, they've taken out drink machines and added the juice machines, if any at all. And of course, no more extreme large helpings of spaghetti, mashed potatoes and those pizzas we all loved. Also, as much as I loved P.E. when I was in high school, that is becoming a least favorite and there isn't even much HOOPLA about sports or extracurricular physical activities. As you stated, adolescents just want to go home and compete with one another in XBOX 360, P.S. 111, etc. The only part of the body getting exercise is hands and fingers!!!
