Stationed at Udorn as a dog handler from 71 thru 72, Dogs name was duke #4S06, we called him baby duke. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and had a chronic cough since leaving thailand, military and civilian doctors do not know the cause of the cough, put claim in, is there any handlers who were stationed at Udorn and were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or with a chronic cough. I would like to hear from you, if there is enough of us handlers maybe the government will have to admit agent orange was used.

- Vietnam Dog Information -- Tom Mitchell, 12:35:53 02/23/03 SunPST (68.8.128.108)
Are you a Vietnam Vet dog handler? Do you want to know what happened to your dog?
The VDHA has access to some information about dogs that served in Vietnam. Compiled by Dr. Howard Hayes, these records are a result of his painstaking research into the affect Agent Orange had our dogs. A result of his research is a pretty accurate list of dogs, their brand number, unit and the dispositon of the dog.
So, if you're were a dog handler in Vietnam and would like to know what happened to your dog, e-mail me and we'll look it up for you. If you served after 1968 we have about a 90% chance of finding the info. Prior to that the records were, well, let's say they were not that good, maybe 50%.

Wanted to know about agent orange exposure on the guys there. Daddy was assessed and listed as an Agent Orange Vet with prostate cancer. I have done research about this defoliant, but wanted to have some personal stories of him and his exposure. Thanks in advance and thank you for your service in Viet Nam.

- Pleiku AFB-633rd-Yep the memories are still there....'67-68 -- Dom Cruz, 19:07:50 11/20/07 TuePST (12.75.136.91)
I was in Pleiku 67-68. Had a fine "four footed radar" courtesy of Uncle Sammy, Chief was the name. One handsome German shepherd - seemed the only K9 he got along with was Penny. I still remember some of the other K9 like Rebel, Putzi, Duke, Dixie, Rex, and others. Troopers all. As handlers we had a comradeship all our own. An example of this is when we were visited by several Army dog handlers fresh from the field. They made it straight to our barracks for a bunk, a long card game and of course some new leashes for the K9. One of the Army dogs in particular was a black lab. Friendly as can be and could alert like crazy. Yep, the memories are still there. God Bless you all.

I have responded to your posting, but have not had a reply. I am that dog handler and Sargent 4M59 was the Sentry dog. This procedure was done because of a broken tooth. We did not know at the time if he was in any pain. He didn't seem to be. Root canal was done as a precaution. I photographed the operation. Pictures will be on the VDHA web soon.

This is the first message on the VSPA K-9 Bulletin Board and I sure am lucky to have this opportunity.
My name is Bill Cummings and I was a handler at U-Tapao RTNA, 1970-1971. I handled a wonderful dog by the name of Brutus X321. He was a great one - and I'm sure that you felt the same way about your dog. Our U-Tapao group has contact with over 115 handlers. I have a great friend, Kelly Bateman that is the point man at Ubon. In addition, we have point men for Korat, NKP, Udorn and we're working on Taklhi.
If anyone has a question or comment concernting the Thai bases, we sure love to hear from you and hopefully help you find handlers that were assigned to the Thai bases.
Of course, we're always looking for volunteers to be a point of contact, so if you might be interested in this GREAT JOB, please contact me.
It's a honor to be a Thailand handler and we'd love to hear from any handlers that served with our Thai allies.
I do have some information on handlers and dogs from all Thai bases, so if you have questions, need answers, or any contact information for handlers, please contact me.

On the first day of assignment, Operations gave you a sheet of paper, and required you to write down your previous assignments, they were: Security, Missile Security, Sentry Dog Security, Air Police, Base Police, Flight Commander, Criminal Investigator, all that effort, and they asked OJT or School trained, I replied School Trained for all, and … I was assigned to the Sentry Dog Section.
My first two (2) days were spent trying to make friends and feed my assigned dog, and then take him through his paces in Obedience and the Obstacle Course. As I looked at the dog in his kennel, he hardly looked like a German Shepherd, both of his ears had gigantic swelling and blood clots so heavy they were pulling his ears down. He had numerous scars on his nose and it look like it was broken in three places. So for a week, we were frequent visitors as the Vet gave him antibiotics and salve for his ears. I do not know to this day why, they never lanced the blood clots on his ears, but he recovered, and was cleared for duty.
The first day of Training, resulted in basic obedience, and the obstacle course, when the dog came to the hurdles, he would jump, clearing the hurdle, but his hind legs would slam and hang on every hurdle, requiring a lifting of his hind legs off and over the hurdle. When it came to working the dog for detection, the MSG in charge, set up three (3) decoys, the first decoy was a sound decoy, which was a tapping on a mess kit. The second decoy was a sight decoy, that would sneak through the grass in an exposed position. The third and final decoy was a scent decoy for the dog to find, by the use of his nose, and sense of smell. I started working the dog from South to North, because the wind was out of the East, and worked the dog for 15 passes, I could hear the tapping, and looked for the tell tale alert indicators for a hearing alert, and it never came. All the while the MSGT was screaming at me about how stupid I was for not seeing the alert. When the dog was about 25 yards away, he alerted, but it was a sight alert. The dog attacked the decoy, and had to be choked out of the attack. We resumed the search pattern, looking for the runner decoy, again after 20 passes, the decoy got up and ran, and the dog ran after him and caught him and attacked, he again had to be pulled off the attack. The scent decoy was dead center in the field, about 75 yards from the runner decoy, and I worked the scent cone, each pass the dog failed to capture the scent. The NCOIC kept yelling, can’t you see the dog alerting, look at his alert, let him work it in. Each pass of the decoy, invoked the words of wisdom from the NCOIC about how stupid I was. He was quite verbal about my talents as a Dog Handler, and for three (3) days we played this game of now your dog sees him, now I don’t.
So to get him off of my back, I told him what the text book says about reading a dogs alert, and he thought, I could actually read the dogs alert. (I could read his sight alert very well) but his scent or hearing alert sucked. )
The next night, we went on post, the dog struggled to get up on the truck, most dogs could jump up into the truck, not this one. As we were going to Post, the dog loved to fight other dogs, he would mix it up, at the drop of the hat. I knew how to keep him in tow, so I never had much of a problem with the dog fighting other dogs. Then I learned by casual remark, the deep dark secret about this dog, the previous handler, would hit the dog over the head with his helmet, every time the dog stepped out of line, or would start fighting other dogs.
The assignment to this dog lasted from September 1966 to November 1966, we were assigned to most of the central K-9 posts, and for the most part, enjoyed the nightly assignments and watching for infiltrators. One evening, I could hear the rustling of grass as if someone was crawling through it. The dog did not hear it, so we walked into the direction of the sound, about three feet from the snake the dog went crazy, his sight alert was excellent, but my heart jumped into my throat, and the dog was literally towed for 200 yards “Daffy Duck” style away from the snake. There was always a mild apprehension on the Dog Post Assignments, because it required me to be extra vigilant on post, to compensate for the lack of hearing or sense of smell by the dog. Then one night in November, 1966, I leashed and muzzled my dog for post, and we made a left face to go to the truck, and both his rear legs gave out and he began crawling to the truck, in spite of Hip Dysphasia, the dog did not want to be denied that truck and post. The Flight Commander was called and asked him to look at the dog, and that he needed to go to the Vet. He agreed, the Vet came in and immediately diagnosed the problem, and he Euthanized the dog and completed an Autopsy. When he finished, he asked me, if I ever had hit the dog while correcting him. I told him no, but the previous handler was known to hit the dog with his helmet. The vet explained that the dogs nose was broken in three places, with multiple collapses of the nasal passages, his ear drums and ear canals were broken by repeated blows to the head, and his ear cartilage was destroyed. The blood clots in his ears which were thought to have been caused by dog fights, were coagulated blood from the helmet beatings he had endured. I waited until 1000 hours for the Autopsy to be typed up and copied, and I took a copy to the NCOIC of the Dog Section, and handed him the results, and I said: “I hope in the future, you never accuse a handler of not being competent, again, according to this autopsy report, the dog could not smell, nor could he hear anymore, because he had been beaten with a steel helmet.” He never did apologize, but he had the audacity to ask me if I would go to Japan and train another dog for the section. My refusal was quick and final, I asked to be assigned to Flight Line Security, and was assigned to Delta Section.

Hi...My father in law (Willard (Bill) Morris) was in 12th Security Police Squadron at Cam Rahn Bay 67-68. He is in an on going battle with the VA for his PTSD. He needs to show evidence when Cam Rahn Bay was attacked, about the fuel bladder explosion cause and effect. If you know anyone that can help me get answers, has flight records, or I can ask questions to, that would be great. He is also looking for Emory Wyhatt that was in C130H out of oki. Emory was a witness.
Thank you for your time,

- K-9 Kennel Call - Request for K-9 Informaton - DC Reunion -- Bill Cummings - VSPA Kennel Master, 13:47:12 08/04/07 SatPDT (69.244.38.235)
To help with logistics it would be a great help to us if any of our Vietnam based K-9 handlers that are planning on attending the D.C. reunion would contact me in a separate e-mail (Please Don't post a reply to this posting) at usafbrutus@comcast.net .
We are putting together a distribution list to help keep information flowing concerning the details, events, etc., for the reunion. Hopefully, this will allow us not to rely on the Bulletin Board to receive and distribute updated information concerning reunion information as it develops.
PLEASE - Do Not Post a reply to this message - PLEASE contact me direct so we don't add unnecessary postings to the Bulletin Board.
Thank you and see you in D.C. - Bill

Greetings,
Wondering if anyone might have some information on a K-9 at Phan Rang, Duke 8F77. He was handled by Malcolm Breaux in 1966 but had not been reassigned to a handler when I left in January 67. I had Duke in the states before going to Phan Rang in 66 and we were both at Phan Rang.
VDHA does not have any information on him and I have not been able to find anyone at the conventions that remembers Duke or his handler after 67.
Thanks,
Richard Lowe

Rocky here. I was at Ubon '70-'71. I was looking for any handlers there at that time. I have talked with Kelly Bateman and see Mike Waller and Bob Nevenhoven every year in Mt. Morris, Illinois. That is where Bob lives. We get together and play golf and consume mass quantities of beer. It is getting harder and harder every year to remember things so if anyone out there remembers us (Kelly, Mike, me or Bob) drop me a line. I live in the Houston area. Work at Shell Chemical and am 4 yrs. away from retirement. especially would lilke to hear from Steve Land, or Bartram Jones or Mike Romanik, but really, any one who remembers us. Good luck to everyone on this site. Rock.

- Bomb Dump -- Michael Allenbach (Search), 10:30:30 04/03/07 TuePDT (4.88.167.203)
I would like to have some copies of the pictures taken the night the VC blew up the Tri-services (bomb dump) area at Cam Rahn in 1971. I know some other dog handlers had pictures of the explosions. I loaned my original pictures to another dog handler after returning to Forbes AFV at Topeka, Ks. and he never returned them. I am sad to say that I do not even remember the other handlers name. Too much time, too much booze. At least the booze has not been a problem since Dec 18th 1984.

Am seeking a patch from the 831st Air Police Sq, K-9 unit. I was one of the second group from George to go to the K-9 training at Lackland in 1959 and I left the K-9 unit in 61 due to an injury that would not allow me to work my dog any more. Also wondering who took Major 5F80 after I left the unit. Would appreciate any pictures, names, etc, especially information on what happened to Major after my discharge from the AF in Oct 62. Many thanks to you guys and maybe gals that took over for us older guys. Welcome home to you that went to Vietnam in my place.

- Alabama War Dog Memorial Update -- Bill Wigginton (Woof!), 17:06:03 10/19/06 ThuPDT (70.158.67.162)
Update. The Alabama War Dog Memorial will be built at the USS Alabama Memorial Park in Mobile Alabama. Our Memorial will be in front of the USS Alabama and between the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials.
Our other projects are:
To start a program in Alabama's schools called "Patriot Pennies" Give your pennies for patriotism.
To record at least 25 Veterans histories for the Library of Congress.
And to build in Central Alabama a Retirement Home for Military Working Dogs, Police Dogs, and all Service Dogs. When these dogs nationwide are too old for service, have medical problems, cannot be taken care of, or whatever the reason, we want to take these dogs, and take care of them with love and affection and the respect they deserve for the rest of their lives. The ones we can retrain, we will retrain and adopt them out.
Also, part of the retirement home will be where the US service men and women that transfer overseas and cannot take their dogs, we will go anywhere nationwide and board their dogs free of charge while they are overseas.
They are great projects. Go to www.awdm.org for more information, or email me.
Thanks,
Big Woof!

- Alabama War Dogs Monument -- Bill Wigginton, 04:44:10 02/16/06 ThuPST (66.32.15.41)
I'm working as advisor on a board here in Birmingham Alabama that is building an "Alabama War Dogs Monument" here in the Birmingham Alabama Area. I arranged for Governor Bob Reilly to sign a proclamation declaring November 18th as Alabama War Dog Team Day.
But I need your help. Our web site will soon be up, and we will soon be making a public announcement about the monument. But we need all dog handlers that are either from the state of Alabama, live in Alabama, or are/were stationed in Alabama to send me your names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses so that we may contact you. We are planning on having a plaque with the names and dog names of all Alabama War Dog Handlers and their dogs at the monument.
Also in conjunction with the Library of Congress, we also need each of you to get with us so that you (if you want to) can make a recording of your military career, and be interviewed about your career. Your tape will then be put in the Library of Congress in a special section for Military Heros from all Wars so that future generations will be able to hear our bios, and know what we and our dogs did for America and for History.
Looking foward to hearing from you at williamrebecca@earthlink.net

- Thanks for the Support VSPA! -- Bill Cummings - VSPA Kennel Master, 09:12:20 10/17/06 TuePDT (67.110.184.210)
Hello everyone – I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for your heartfelt support that you display during the reunion. With your help and very, very generous support – the K-9 handlers of the VSPA raised an enormous amount of funds for three very worthy and on going projects.
Thank you for helping us raise over $2,000.00 to support the Nemo’s War Dog Heroes Memorial at Lackland AFB, TX. Please visit http://635thk9.com/tdhnemo.htm to learn more about our project.
In addition, with your help, we raised over $500.00 to support our “Old Dawgs & Pups” program that supports current MWD handlers “down range” in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, and Africa. We have had the opportunity to meet many of these young men and women at San Antonio, Moody, and Nellis during our reunions. To date, we have supported over 70 active duty MWD handlers. Much like the United Way – Thanks to YOU – it’s working. Please visit http://www.pbase.com/635thk9/old_dawgs to learn more about our project.
Over $200.00 was also donated to the Alabama War Dog Project!
On behalf of all of us “Old Dawgs” we just want to say thank you once again. If you should need additional information on either of these projects, please contact me off line and I will do my best to provide you any information that you request.

- Information Update -- Larry E. Johnson, 17:42:44 11/05/05 SatPST (68.72.108.61)
Phu Cat - Bobito's serial number is correct. I worked Rocky and his correct serial number is X044. The Voss that I was with didn't work Selig. There was a tall skinny Sgt. (I can't remember his name but I do have a picture of him with Selig - they worked ambush together). Steve Berry served '70-'71 - we went over together.

- Thailand Handlers and Leatherman Supply K-9 Troops in Iraq -- Bill Cummings - VSPA Kennel Master, 19:33:02 02/23/06 ThuPST (72.9.6.36)
Thailand Handlers and Leatherman Supply K-9 Troops in Iraq
With encouragement from the "Old Dawgs" in the Thailand Dog Handlers the Leatherman Tool Group of Portland, Oregon, has just donated a bunch of the company's heavy-duty Leatherman Surge multi-tools to our "Pups, K-9 handlers at Ali Air Base, Kirkuk Air Base, and Forward Operating Base Warrior in Iraq. The Old Dawgs suggested the Surge for this donation because it's big and extremely rugged; it's a 4.5" multi-tool with more than 20 useful features including two locking knife blades that can be opened with one hand (perfect for use when your other hand is leashed to a big dog). The Surge's other features include several screwdrivers, wire cutters, pliers, a saw, files and scissors.
The Thailand Dog Handlers are former U.S. Air Force dog handlers, veterans of the Vietnam War and members of the Vietnam Dog Handlers Association and Vietnam Security Police Association. Since the beginning of American military deployments to Iraq we have been active in sourcing supplies for the dog handlers and coordinating shipments.
The donated Leatherman tools were delivered to Iraq in mid-February, and the handlers are very pleased with the gifts. They've told us how they might use the tools, as well as how much they appreciate the support from home. Some of their comments were:
"Thank you so much for this; I don't know what to say. We are forever grateful to you and the rest of the "Old Dawgs". Thanks again for everything and if there is ever anything I can do, please don't hesitate to ask."
"I just wanted to say thanks for the Leatherman. They are awesome tools. They will come in handy a lot. They are so nice looking I hate to use it, but that's what they were made for, right? Thanks again."
"They are sweet! Good god, I'll never need a gun again, I'll just throw that at them!"
"The package was received. Thank you so much for this generous token. The handlers loved them. Please thank everyone for me on behalf of the 101st Airborne Division K-9 Section. Thank you so much!!"
"Thank you again so much. I really did need one of those. Not trying to be all mushy, but thanks!"
"Thank you so much for that tool. I KNOW for a fact that will be in use. As I told Bill, I'll tell you, thank you for everything you're doing for us. I makes us handlers over here feel good that there are people out there that appreciate us. Thanks again!!!"
"We just got the package. It was like kids at Christmas. I had to make sure nobody sliced off a limb."
"Toolboxes aren't available here, but now I carry a toolbox in my pocket with that Leatherman. Today I was able to mount the bracket on my helmet for my Night Vision Goggles in time for my night ops. Yesterday I used it to take care of a jammed cartridge in my Humvee gunners' 240B machine gun. I can't tell you how many times we've been outside the wire and something came up where we needed a tool like this."

- The Death of our Brother -- Andrew P Wrobel SSGT USAF VET, 19:36:35 01/01/06 SunPST (71.241.126.195)
I want to pass on some information.
My Friend, Frank Rutkowski from Dickson City Pennsylvania, passed on in 2005.
Frank was in the 12th Security Police, I believe he served 18 months at Cam Rahn. I grew up with Frank and went through school with him. Frank joined the Air Force right out of high school and so did I.
While At Cam Rahn, I served 13 months, 1969/1970 with the 12th Civil Engineers. As you might recall, the Squadrons were back to back. I discovered that Frank was there quite by accident while walking through the hootches one day. We were elated that someone from home was near by.
Frank and I shared time together off and on. I often accompanied him to the gun bunker he posted along with his dog. When we came home, Frank and I continued our friendship, although not socially close, we saw each other several times a month. I knew his whole family and spned 28 years as a Police Officer in our home town until forced into retirment by a hearing loss and Agent Orange related afflictions.
Frank, a strong young man, came home from the war afflicted with numerous physical complaints. He married and eventually divorced and lived at home with his loving mother. He was not well for many years and finally the man I likened to Clint Walker in high school succumed to heart and other related and unknown illnesses. Resembling a man twice his age and half his size.
Frank always complained that he could not get treatment or compensation from the VA. I am not certain what the whole story was regarding his issues with health and the VA.
Frank was a fine friend and Air Force Comrade.
Perhaps some of you knew him. Perhaps some of you served with him. I just want you to know, that he was a part of you and a part of me. I will never forget him and our friendship.
I will never forget the boys in the 12 Security Police Squadron.
God Bless you all !
Andrew P. " Buzz " Wrobel

- CSPS K9 gear -- Don Graham, 05:00:02 08/31/05 WedPDT (12.75.222.71)
I resently picked up a metal modal of a Nam USAF K9 handler. Before putting this together I want to be sure it's correct. There is one item that I'm not sure about and would like some feedback on. The ammo pouches are the army style with grenades attached to the sides. This handler is suppose to be from the CSPS and I would like to know if they were issued & carried grenades in this manner.
