I was stationed at Korat Air Base from 11/71 to 11/72 and I was in K9 school at Lackland during the summer of 71. I had alot of buddies from K9 school that were stationed in Thailand.

I am looking for friends of my Dads ( Richard Graham)in V-nam. He is fron Phoenix, N.Y. He was a A1190A (K-9) in class # 3A1IR81130A-1. DISCHARGED at Wright Patterson in Sep 1971. His dogs were Kalub and Joey both KIA in attacks at and around Phu Cat and Cam Rhan Bay. He supported Army Inf. units as well. It will help him settle some old loose ends. I resently picked up a metal modal of a Nam USAF K9 handler. Before putting this together I want to be sure it's correct. There is one item that I'm not sure about and would like some feedback on. The ammo pouches are the army style with grenades attached to the sides. This handler is suppose to be from the CSPS and I would like to know if they were issued & carried grenades in this manner.

I was a Sentry Dog Handler stationed at Utapao, Thailand from July 1968 until July 1969 that came over a the second wave of handlers bringing dogs and equipment to establish the dog program there. I would enjoy hearing from anyone that served with me and just know how you are and what has happened in your life since we were together. You may have been out of site for all of these years but you certainly haven't been out of mind. I think of so many of you so often and would really enjoy hearing from you. Here�s the info on the fellow handler who was injured in Iraq.

Attention All,

Below is the message sent out on one of our fellow SF K-9 handlers stationed at Peterson AFB, CO. Take a moment today and say a prayer for TSgt Jamie Dana as she battles for her life after driving over an Improvised Explosive Device in Iraq this weekend.

�On 25 Jun (local AM), TSgt Jamie DANA (MWD handler from Peterson AFB CO) was traveling in an Armored Vehicle (type unknown) when they hit an IED (MWD was killed). The vehicle flipped three times prior to stopping. She has massive head trauma, lacerations to her face, massive pelvic damage, internal bleeding, and substantial damage to her organs. She was transferred to Balad where she had an emergency surgery on her spleen and to repair the right side of her diaphragm and stop the bleeding. She is listed in critical condition. She is scheduled to depart from Balad at approximately 0000hrs EDT. The are going to try to ensure that she is stabilized enough to travel stateside, but her status may not allow it. Her spouse and commander have been notified and they are working EFMTs for the husband. Casualty is waiting until they know if she is going to be transferred immediately or held at Landstuhl prior to having the husband travel.�

Update: Got a call from my old unit this a.m. She's still pretty bad...on 80% life support. They're flying her to Walter Reid here in DC. Husband is a cop assigned to Cheyenne Mountain.

I was never a dog Handler. But as an NCO, I truly understood and appreciated the difficult, and dangerous task that you and your dog was continuously assigned. You both played an important and intricate part in Base Security.
I thank you and your dog for your service, during a time when other refused to serve and defend this great country.

The Dreaded K-9

In the mirror of my soul echoes
the ghost of a jungle war long

Sights and sounds so surreal,

I was an instructor at the 8th Army Sentry Dog School(Korea) in 71-72.I would really like to here from anyone who was there.I have not been able to find anything about the school on the internet.Its like it never exsisted.

During the VSPA reunion held in October at Tucson, Az., many of us attended the demonstration provided by the 355th Security Forces Squadron. Our first stop on the tour of Davis-Monthan AFB was to attend a Military Working Dog (MWD) demonstration.

We were quite amazed how our troops and canine partners performed to today�s standards of professionalism. Following this part of the tour, we departed for lunch, the �Bone Yard� and the Pima Air Museum.

Many of our �old troops� purchased T-shirts to support the 16th Annual Tucson Area K-9 Trials that was held on November 12-14, 2004. Over thirty (30) Law Enforcement agencies, departments and military units, with more than 65 teams participated in the competition. It is with great pleasure that I announce that SRA Wyatt Rhoden, and K-9 partner Ralf (D033) captured first place in the Bomb Detection competition. SRA Rhoden and SSgt Jessica George, and K-9 Partner Diego (E318), combined points resulted in a 5th place finish overall for the 355th MWD Section in Agency Detection competition.

SRA Rhoden is the adopted �pup� of Kelly Bateman (Ubon RTAB 1970-71). SSgt Jessica George was one of our hosts at the Davis-Monthan tour and also served as part of the color guard at the VDHA reunion banquet in Phoenix.

On behalf of TSgt Max Talley, and the men and women of the 355th SFS MWD Section, that I would like to express their sincere appreciation to each and everyone who enjoyed and supported the �troops� in co-sponsoring this year�s K-9 trials.

Once again, our heritage has come through with flying colors and continues to pave the way for the airman and NCOs of tomorrow.

In conjunction with both the VSPA Reunion held in Tucson and the VDHA Reunion held the following week in Phoenix, two separate visits were made to the Military Working Dog Kennels of the 355th Security Forces Squadron as part of the tours of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

These tours were made on October 7th and 15th, 2004. Members of the 8th Security Police Squadron (Ubon RTAB), 388th SPS (Korat RTAB), 432nd SPS (Udorn RTAB) and the 635th SPS (U-Tapao RTAB) Sentry Dog Sections attended.

A magnificent K-9 demonstration was presented by the following members assigned to the 355th SFS Military Working Dog Section at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base:

As you might imagine, the old �Sentry Dog� handlers were more than impressed by the capabilities of the new Military Working Dogs and their handlers at Davis-Monthan AFB.

We were extremely proud of the professionalism and spirit displayed by the members of the unit. As the old Air Force dog handlers exchanged information with our modern day counterparts � we were also impressed by their knowledge, dedication, and willingness to serve in a career field that was very near to our hearts. These troops are indeed career military personnel, and they display it very proudly.

Their leadership qualities were more than apparent as we observed the sparkling facility, the numerous canines, and the immaculate personnel under their command.

As an opening event to our VSPA Reunion, the members of the 355th Security Forces Squadron provided a demonstration of the weapons systems available to our warriors on the ground. Once again, the MWD Section led the way as they showed the capabilities of our canines and handlers to adjust to the events of our ever changing world.

On September 16, 2004, Staff Sergeants Jessica George and William "Billy" Bodwell assisted in the presentation of the colors during the Vietnam Dog Handler Association. You can only imagine the pride that filled the room as the canine team proceeded and trailed the colors. The old soldiers were completely impressed by all members of the color guard team. It was a highlight of the event.

We wish to express our appreciation to TSgt Talley and the members of the 355th SFS Military Working Dog Section at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base for carrying on the proud traditions of the Air Force Sentry Dog sections that proceeded the 355th.

The dedication of the pedestal to honor the K9 heroes of World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand was held on May 8, 2004, at Sacrifice Field, Ft. Benning, Georgia. Approximately 100 people attended the ceremonies. Jesse Mendez, with a lot of assistance, coordinated and planned the event. On a beautiful Georgia day, our canine heroes who so bravely gave their lives for our mission were honored for their service and sacrifice by handlers, friends and the general public.

The ceremony was opened by Jesse Mendez by introducing Dan Miller (USMC Scout) as the Master of Ceremonies for the dedication.

Posting of the Colors and introduction of the Flag Bearers and escorts followed. Flag Bearers, introduced by Bill Cummings (635th SPS), were representatives from all of our services (former military dog handlers of all types), civic organizations, and our current military personnel and active Military Working Dogs from the U S Navy and Air Force.

DoD Announces Korean Defense Service Medal

The Defense Department announced today the creation of the Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM).
The KDSM is a service medal to give special recognition for the sacrifices and contributions made by members of the U.S. armed forces who have served or are serving in the
Republic of Korea.

Public Law 107-314 legislated the creation of a new medal to recognize military service in the Republic of Korea and the surrounding waters.

Members of the armed forces authorized the KDSM must have served in support of the defense of the Republic of Korea. The area of eligibility encompasses all land area of the Republic of Korea, and the contiguous water out to 12 nautical miles, and all air spaces above the
land and water areas.

The KDSM period of eligibility is July 28, 1954, to a future date to be determined by the secretary of defense.

Servicemembers must have been assigned, attached, or mobilized to units operating in the area of eligibility and have been physically deployed in the area of eligibility for 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days or meet one of the following criteria:

* Be engaged in actual combat during an armed engagement,regardless of the time in the area of eligibility.

* Is wounded or injured in the line of duty and requires medical evacuation from the area of eligibility.

* While participating as a regularly assigned air crewmember flying sorties into, out of, within, or over the area of eligibility in support of military operations. Each day that one or more sorties are flown in
accordance with these criteria shall count as one day toward the 30 or 60-day requirement.

* Personnel who serve in operations and exercises conducted in the area of eligibility are considered eligible for the award as long as the basic time criteria is met. Due to the extensive time period for KDSM
eligibility, the nonconsecutive service period for eligibility remains cumulative throughout the entire period.

The KDSM may be awarded posthumously, and only one award of the KDSM is authorized for any individual.

Each military department will prescribe appropriate regulations for administrative processing, awarding and wearing of the KDSM and ribbon for their servicemembers, to include application procedures for veterans, retirees, and next-of-kin.

More than 40,000 members of the U.S. armed forces have served in the Republic of Korea or the waters adjacent thereto each year since the signing of the cease-fire agreement in July 1953, which established the Demilitarized Zone. For more than 50 years, U.S. Armed Forces'efforts to deter and defend the Korean Peninsula have helped maintain democracy and preserve the indomitable spirit of freedom.

Looking for any ex dog handlers that were stationed at RAF Bentwaters the same time as me. I was a K9 handler there from 1960 thru 1963. My dogs name was King. I just recently visited the base and the old kennel building is still there, but deserted. I have pictures of then and now if anyone is interested. About eight of us slept in a tent building right at the kennel area. Maybe someone can remember those times.

I'm looking for anyone who served in the 48th and 43rd IPSD units in Veitnam in 1971-1972. Quang Tri,Da Dang. I was trained in Fort Bennings, Georgia as an off leashed dog Handler. Just looking for someone who has experience the same things I did. I have shut out a lot of my experiences but it's time I try and remember. please if anyone out there could help me remember I'd appreciate it.

I am looking for information on the dog I handled at DaNang in 1967. He was moved to Bien Hoa AB and assigned to Sgt. John W. Farnher on 4 Jan. 70 and later assigned to Sgt. Danny L. Tibbits this was on 10 April 70. He was euthanized on 11 Jan. 71. If anyone knows these guys and can get me in touch with them I would greatly appreciate the effort.

8TH ARMY SENTRY DOG HANDLERS SCHOOL -- JOHN P. OSWALD, 13:10:13 06/13/03 FriPDT (155.82.145.253)
I don't know if you worked at the same Dog Handlers School that I attended in about March 1972, but I went to Camp Howard for Dog Handlers traing. The instructors name I believe was (Korean National) Mr. In, and the Vet Tech's last name was Rattray. The actual training area was situated about 15 minutes from the main camp. I still remember the quite dusty ride every morning to get to the training area which included the dog kennels, vet room, and the obstacle course. I don't know of any other dog handler training school in the Seoul, Korea area. I was stationed at Camp Colburn, 15 miles south of Seoul. It is a now defunct Sergeant missle base, where we guarded the missle bunkers. I hope this information is usefull. I would appreciate any replys. Thank you. jpo

I am an old handler who served my time in Asia in the PI and Korea. After reading some of the bulletin boards for the guys who served in the war I have to say that I am touched. Maybe I am ignorant but I never realized the harm and danger you were in. This actually goes for all security police in the war zone. I just read the after action report of the TET offensive on the net and I was shocked at the amount of action the security police saw there. Gentlemen and ladies if there were any, I salute you and totally respect the job you did there. I am now proud to have been an Air Force Security Policeman, especially K9.

I have found out were my father served. He had two tours one at bien hoa and one at phan rang. His first dog was named bear. he was an all black shepherd. he got killed by a mortar shell. My father was a handler in vietnam. his name is Arnold dean Mathews. All of his pictures and things with his dogs have since been destroyed. I know he trained in weisbotten Germany and then went to vietnam. I am a K9 handler for a law enforcement agency and my father has finally started to talk about his experieces with his dogs. I know he had one killed by a mortar shell. I would like to find any information or maybe a picture for him. I will find out the dogs name and place were he was stationed if needed. We are supporting dog handlers that have been deployed to the gulf region & South West Asia. At the moment, we are supporting 20+ handlers at 8 locations. These handlers are facing long deployments, all have been extended. We are teaming up these young war pups with old war dogs (from Viet Nam) and some civilians volunteers. Our volunteers are sending emails and care packages to their deployed handlers.

This is a joint service operation. We have two former Viet Nam dog handlers; a USMC Scout Dog handler and a Army Mine & Tunnel Dog Handler as members. We will support handlers from any branch of our military or members of our coalition allies. We currently have two handlers from Denmark adopted.

The old dogs like it as much as the young dogs. We all share a bond with them that ignores our age difference. We need more volunteers. Hurry, there is only a limited number of young pups!

I'll be joining both the USAF Security Police Association and this organization as soon as my funds start rolling in again. (finally a job after 8 months unemployed).

I served in the Air Force Security Police from 1968 to 1977 (most enjoyable time of my life for the most part even though didn't get much time off). Served in Vietnam starting at Da Nang (Perimeter Security Juliet Area) from Sept 69 to Jan 70 (too many handlers, not enough dogs) so I transferred to Tuy Hoa and served there from Jan 70 to I think Aug 70 cause they were closing the base early. Seems like a lot of guys remember their dogs names, but for the life of me I just can't remember mine (keep thinking it was King but don't remember serial #'s). Hard to remember all the dogs I've worked with but remember Duke in England from 1973-76, Lucky at Barksdale AFB 70-72, Mike at Lackland AFB (training who didn't make it the 1st round, went back for retraining) early 69. Agent Orange has taken it's toll on me somewhat (memory problems, diabetes, and so on) and I wish I could remember some of the guys who I served with in Vietnam. Maybe they'll remember me. A1C in Vietnam, Sgt at Barksdale AFB and SSgt at Lakenheath, England and Dyess, AFB, TX.

Course now I wish I was with our guys in Iraq doing it our way.

TD okinawa Dec. '71-Jan.'72(Sukuran)an old Jap airfield up above Kadena AFB. Arrive Saigon Jan. 1972. Six of us, all M.P.'s, assigned HQ-HQ Co MACV. Two went to Can Tho, two went to Phu Bai, and Thorne Helgesen and I got Saigon. Thorne wanted Police training for a job with Minneapolis P D after he returned home. I'm looking for info on Tommy Campbell of Detroit-one of the MP dog handlers that went north. We flew to Vietnam on the same plane, took the same freedom bird home, and both finished our tours assigned to the 553rd MP's, Ft. Campbel, KY. in 1973.

a lot michiganders were their, greg, don, etcof. Old woody was our kennel master, we helped build a bunker next to the kennels. HENO graduated with our class, it was his last chance!!! I remember the biggest problem, heno would tear up his handlers when they went in to get him off the SUIT!! The instuctor resolved the issue with a large syringe filled with water! If I remember, HENO went through 8 handlers, all branches of military, and ended up with Air Force,GO Blue!!!!!!!!! iF THIS IS Correct!!!!! Its been a long time!!

Long time ago I was there. When I left I buried all the memories very deep. Recently I visited the WALL in DC and the memories started coming back and I started searching on the internet...I only found 2 ..they were on the WALL.
