Can any of you remember the Technically Speaking article about a Tech graduate who survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis?

Hi Donna,

The article you are looking for is in the November 1995 issue of TECHnically Speaking. And, yes I have that issue. The Tech graduate is James O'Donnell (Class of '38). His story stands out in my mind because, during my high school years, I delivered the newspaper to his parents house on Hendricks Place. I think that I met him once when collecting for the paper. I know that he attended the dedication of the veterns memorial at Tech a few years ago. I have always been interested in the story of the USS Indianapolis. There were at least two books written and a movie made about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. The book that I read is, "Fatal Voyage" by Dan Kurzman. The move was called "The Voyage of the Shark" (I think).

I'm sure some of our other readers can add to what I've written.

Yes, Jim O'Donnell lived on Hendricks Pl (my family lived on Parkview, the first street west of Hendricks.) He is still alive and I believe he just celebrated his 91st birthday. A true American hero and a very nice man!

Thanks Sam and Linda, good information on him. I'm glad he is still alive, and hope he has recorded his experiences on paper, tape, or video. I think there is a group that does try to record all the WWII military (well, I'm sure there are several such groups).

I will try to retrieve the November'95 Technically Speaking article. I thought I had already but can't find it (does that sound familiar? It does if your house is like mine!)
