Subject: Getting ready to go, Part 2: Inner thoughts

Glasgow Airport hates me.

At least, that is the impression I'm getting from it. I had trouble getting on the ground on the way in, and now my flight has been delayed going out. It always rains in Scotland...why delay flights because of it? The airport has seemingly come alive, and decided to take some of it's pent-up anger and aggression out on me. Out on Matt Thornhill.

I hate times like these. I've done all the studying, reviewing, and internal strategizing for my upcoming match on Glory. Looked at every possibility, planned for every eventuality. My study habits in college are what earned me the nickname "The Student of the Game". A nickname I am most proud of...maybe even moreso than "The Natural". "The Natural" denotes genetic greatness. "The Student of the Game" denotes hard work, dedication, blood, sweat, and tears to get what you want; to reach your goals. And that thought always brings me back to my past.

Son, always remember that if you work hard, give it 100%, and study thoroughly beforehand, you have UNLIMITED potential in the world of amateur wrestling. You make your mother and I so proud, Matthew. Keep reaching for the stars, and one day you'll make it!

My Dad. No finer human being has ever lived on this planet. My dad embodied all that he strove to instill into my life: He worked hard. He studied his craft. He knew Jesus...was born again...on his way to Heaven. All of these things he helped me develop in my life. The "Tools for Any Trade", he would call them.

I only wish he were here now to see me reaping the fruits of all of his hard work in my life. Cancer took his life five years ago. If only he could see the highs his son has reached! A collegiate NCAA champion one year, runnerup the other three. Could have been champ all four years if not for a little underhanded cheating...

Nonetheless, I would have been champ in my dad's eyes. He would have been able to recognize the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication I put into the training, the studying, and the prayer. And he would have been proud.

I like to think my dad was looking down on me this past Wednesday...standing up for what is good in the world. And I'd like to think he will be watching me with pride this coming week in Lisbon. Win or lose, I'm going to give it 100% of what I've got. That's all he would ever ask for.

Dad, this one is for you.
