Retrospect

The camera fades in to show a fuzzy image of the Web of Pain structure at Rock Bottom with all six competitors standing inside the belly, tense and prepared to compete. There is no sound but the crackle of static for a few seconds, then the image is suddenly focused perfectly. Clips from the brutal match begin to play, and a familiar voice is heard speaking softly in the background.

Voice: Wednesday, December 25th, 2002. Christmas day. While millions of families around the United States and the world exchanged gifts, six men in the Grand Canyon of Arizona came to exchange blows. The spirit of giving was not quite as prevalent this year as it has been in the past, to say the least. Christmas of 2002 was not a time for merriment, but a time for injury, a time for brutality, and a time for revenge. While children sat in the safety of their homes and tore open their presents, six competitors stepped into a giant steel hell and tore open one another.

The reel shows footage of Mike Manson falling on his neck on the barbed wire in slow motion, followed by the victorious Drew Carrig reaching up and grasping the CWF World Title.

Voice: It was most certainly a happy holiday for Drew Carrig, finally obtaining that which he wanted more than anything in the entire world, but a night of chagrin for the former champion Mike Manson. Instead of finding victory and relief, he found nothing but pain, defeat, and loss.

The clip reel shows Mike Manson reaching for the title, then going face-first into the steel with the massive bulldog from Travis Smith.

Voice: Wednesday was the night that Mike Manson literally had the CWF title slip through his fingers. So close... and yet so far away. His sins of the past finally caught up with him in the Web of Pain.

The picture cuts to a totally new image, showing the spare bedroom of Darrin Chaos' Bloomington, Minnesota apartment. The Rock Bottom poster has been torn from the wall, the corners still nailed up, with the rest lying shredded in the middle of the room. The photographs also still adorn the wall, remaining lopsided, the frames shattered, with a crimson stain on the white carpet below where the blood trickled from Chaos' knuckles.

Voice: And then there was Darrin Chaos, the underdog, the young man that nobody expected to be any real kind of threat. He was even described by fellow Tag Team Champion Zeitgeist the Perpetual as a joke.

There is a long pause and the screen goes totally black. After a moment, there is the popping and hissing noise of a match being struck, and a tiny flame shows up in the center of the screen, granting just enough light to see the hand that holds it. The match flickers as the flame is distributed also to a pair of candles in the middle of the picture. As the hand lifts the match, it illuminates the face of Darrin Chaos for just a second before the flame is blown out. The candles on the table give just enough light to reveal the wooden table they sit upon and Darrin's black Midtown T-shirt.

Darrin Chaos: Well who's laughing now, Zeitgeist? Was it funny when I planted you on your face from twenty feet up and pinned you to bring the overdue end to your over-glorified winning streak? Oh yeah, I'll bet you thought that was a laugh and a half. The joke's over Zeitgeist, in case I didn't already make that abundantly clear at Rock Bottom. In the Web of Pain at Rock Bottom, I came within an eyelash of winning the CWF World Title, and becoming the youngest champion in Championship Wrestling Federation history. And what did you accomplish? What did the Perpetual Zeitgeist do to prove his superiority? You did defeat me before the main event in the No DQ match, I will give you that, but when it really mattered, you couldn't nearly cut it. I hope you cherished your time on that ladder, because that's the closest you will ever get to that world title.

Darrin bends over and his face becomes visible again for an instant as he picks up his CWF Tag Title from the floor and tosses it carelessly onto the table.

Darrin Chaos: I guess that as long as I possess this title, you're still my partner. Well I gotta be honest with you, it used to seem like it was worth it, but now I'm starting to think that I don't give two shits for the tag team division, or the tag titles. Now that these are no longer singles titles, I have to depend at least somewhat on you to retain my title. That, to say the least, is not an idea I'm all that fond of. So when it's time for Zeitgeist and Darrin to take on the NDN Empire, will I fight? Yes. Will I win? Of course. Do I need the help of Zeitgeist the Perpetual? Don't be ridiculous. Wednesday night I'm going to get back into the ring, and injuries or no injuries, I'm going to kick the NDN Empire's asses, and further prove that I am the youth, and I am the rapidly approaching future of this business. Happy Holidays.

There is a dull thud as Darrin flips the table over and the candle light is instantaneously extinguished.
