You don't have to give all the details, but let them know that he did something wrong and went to jail. If you don't tell them the truth they could blame themselves for him not showing up. On top of that sooner or later they will find things out and it would be better coming from you then someone else that might tell them all kinds of lies. Hang in there, this too shall pass.
