joe the problem your describing is very commen though terrifying .i have experienced it many times.you may think you are wide awake but you have probably dropped off for just a second.when it happens to me i find myself awake and totally paralysed , unable to move or breath .however ,as you have described i am fully aware and can think rationaly .it is utterly terrifying!when it happens i can even feel a pressence.it is obiously a medical conditiontry not to worry and try relaxation therapy and ask your doctor for advice.your not going mad and its not paranormal.> this is gonna make me sound like I'm crazy
