Subject: Guardian ghosts

About five years ago, I was in a rather aggressive relationship. This side of my partner did not show itself until several weeks after we had moved into a small cottage, built around the turn of the century. About the same time, we started to experience several things, which we initially put down to the age of the property. The most common phenomena were lights turning themselves on in the middle of the night and the wardrobe doors opening for no reason - the latter used to unnerve the dog a lot.

My partner started working nights so both of us spent a lot of time on our own in the cottage. I often sensed that someone was in the room with me when I was alone at night, particularly in the kitchen (which was very cold all year round) and the bathroom, but never saw anything. On one occasion, I felt someone sit on the bed at about 3am, and assumed that my partner had returned early from work. The dog was reacting as if someone she knew was there but when I turned on the light, I saw nothing.

One day, I came home from work and my partner was quite agitated. He had been sitting in the lounge watching TV when the front door (which led directly into the lounge) sounded like it had opened and shut, as if someone was entering the room. The dog then appeared to watch something crossing the room. He then told me that something had overturned the wicker bin which was by the door. This experience had clearly unnerved him and he said that there had been a feeling of malice in the room.

I know that the things that the pair of us experienced at this house are not particularly dramatic but I found those that I had felt were strangely comforting at a particularly unhappy and emotive time in my life - almost like someone/thing was looking out for me. I have always felt that it was strange how my partner felt very uncomfortable about his experiences in comparison. I have often wondered whether I was subconsciously creating the phenomena as a way of self comfort during a bad time. I have experienced the sense of someone/thing being present before at other emotional times in my life - for example, when I first went to University, I felt the presence of a dog by my chair in my room on several occasions.
