I have to say up front that none of my family is playing with a full deck. My childhood was pretty grim and my mom was paranoid schizophrenic. I began to experience sleep paralysis when I was in my early teens and went through it often until I hit my 20's. I still have an occasional bout. But what was really scary back then was that I would sometimes wake up believing myself to be under attack. Something would be clawing me, and tearing at my hair and my clothes, scatching me and endeavouring to strange me. I would wrestle with this thing and be down on the floor fighting for my life. My parents would be outside my LOCKED door, which I put the chest of drawers in front of at night. They were not safe people either. They never saw me fighting with this unseen attacker, and thought I had night mares. But I would be fighting. Finally, at some point I would be holding a hand that was struggling to get me, and the thought would hit me..."That's MY hand". And then my hand would stop trying to kill me. At the time I had two theories...one that I was possessed and the other, which seemed much more likely, was that I was suicidal and chicken to do the deed whilst awake, and so trying to accomplish it in my sleep.
Years past. This stopped happening sometime before my marriage, which at 16, got me away from my terrifying parents. I never knew anything else about it. The one night a couple of years ago, a TV show called 20/20 was playing. The subject under investigation was 'ALIEN HAND SYNDROME" This is caused by a glich in the frontal lobes. It generally happens in the teenage years, generally to girls, and it is generally the left hand which becomes 'posseses'. It is not know why this happens and it usually goes away of its own accord. The hand seems to have a will of its own. They had interviews with a couple of old folks who hadn't grown out of it. Their hands often tried to cause them harm, or at least oftern interferred with what they were trying to do. For instense, the old lady was trying to open a book and her alien hand was trying just as hard to close it. Looking at her doing that, I remember my mother doing exactly the same thing. Like I said no one in my family is playing with a full deck.
