Subject: Our Forum

Our forum is dedicated to An Ghorta Mhor – The Great Hunger (1845-53)

This forum was created on Sept. 1st. 2002, by the North West Great Hunger Memorials Committee. We were established in Derry City in 1995, by a local author and historian.
The committee has among its main sponsors Derry City Council, Donegal County Council, & Strabane Urban Council.. Its list of distinguished patrons will be posted later. New Patrons are cordially invited to join our list.

The main objective of the committee is to erect a N-W An Ghorta Mhor Memorial on Derry dockside. The site was selected some years ago after joint discussions with Derry City Council and the local Harbour Museum. Fund-raising is on-going so no final date for its erection can be decided yet.

Amongst the committee’s proudest achievements so far, besides helping local commemorative groups elsewhere to erect memorials (1995-2000), was the introduction of a U.S.-created curriculum into over 350 colleges and schools, on a cross-community basis, across the Six Counties.

Its reconstruction remains a priority, but we are not too technical on such matters.
