ADDITIONAL NOTES:

1. Derry City Council has donated the site for the Northwest An Ghorta Mhor Memorial. It will stand on a spot where the coffin-ships departed. Significantly, this part of the dockside was chosen recently as the berth for visiting luxury cruise liners.

2. Sponsors include Derry City Council, Donegal County Council and Strabane Urban Council.

3. An open competition will invite designs from Irish sculptors, on both sides of the border.

4. The selection panel for the final choice of public work will include the Arts Council and the major sponsors, which could include the AOH of America, or its appointees. The Memorials Committee’s own choice favors realistic, rather than abstract art forms e.g. Briget O’Donnel and children as depicted by the London Illustrated News (1848).

5. The Memorials Committee’s chief executives, serving since its creation in 1995, include:

Daniel Ayling (Chairman) Secretary of the Derry #1 Div.
Tony Carlin, (Treasurer) former SDLP Mayor Of Derry
George O’Doherty (Hon. Sec) author & historian
Joe McCloskey (Trustee) Former Derry Div. V-Pres.
Mary Ellen O’Doherty, one of the last surviving widows of a War for Independence (1916-23) veteran.

6. A Pilot Scheme has introduced the US-created Great Hunger Curriculum into 350 colleges and schools, 30 of which will be Gaelic speaking institutions. Translation is currently in the hands of the relevant department of the Dublin Government.

7. The final part of the proposed program will be a musical commemoration, which will be captured on video and reproduced as a CD for pupils and other interested parties. An experienced composer and schoolteacher from Portadown are spearheading this project.
