In reply to: Caitlin 's message, "Battle of the Bands" on 12:06:52 10/15/02 Tue

hey caitlin,
thanks for checking our site-was a cool day yesterday, your band rocked!-if you wanna do any gigs with us that'll be cool so just leave a message here bout it or something!

anyways heres a little something i find about battle of the bands from ben's journal which kinda explains the day...though i didn't write it...

THAT'S PURE HERESY!
The EASS Battle of the Bands is a total farce.
There were three categories - young (years 7 - 9), GCSE age (years 10 & 11), and sixth form (years 12 & 13).
I went there to support PlenOptiC (of course), but there were other bands there as well. Bands of note were the venerable PlenOptiC, of course (Kye has quit the band), Pure (okay), Hectic (not very good), Suddenly Religious for Chocolate, which featured many a girl (of the random variety), and Exodus, whose lead singer was a small pink fairy, who made the following joke: "What bees have milk in them? ...BOOBIES!"
More bands... the winners of category 3 were a fantastic band called Zebras Bring Death (hehe, zebza). Me and Edward liked them a lot due to the fantastic cover of Metallica's One that they performed, they deserved to win that category (sorry Ren, Stead, Emily). The winners of category 2 (and everyone knew they were going to win) were a brilliant, totally insane band called The Young Ecuadorians. Their music was really good, but the main reason they were good is the actions of the lead singer, Vince. He not only introduced with "We are The Young Ecuadorians, and I am more than slightly intoxicated...", but also filled the act with a combination of what looked like very manic Tim Booth dancing and the jumping actions of the boyish rock-pop group Busted. And drunkenness. When he went up to get his prize, he had to be carried by the bassist!
Now for the heresy. The 'winners' of category 1 were.... the same group that won it last year. A GARAGE!! crew called "The Reload Crew". Now, they should not have won because (i) they sucked, (ii) the band that came after them and did a wonderful Eric Clapton cover should have got the prize, (iii) they sucked, (iv) you shouldn't enter a garage crew into a rock music competition, and (v) they sucked. Blaze said he'd steal their song for his composition piece, haha!
Now that wouldn't have been so bad - if it wasn't for this...
After the winners has been announced, the most important prize was announced - the Best Original Song. Only 3 bands had done a song of their own composition. PlenOptiC's was blatantly the best (and I say that with no bias, if it was crap I would have said that!).

"And the winner is..."
"Plenoptic!" shouted the girl behind me.
"Plenoptic!" screamed a girl three rows back.
"Plenoptic!" I roared.
"Plenoptic!" Edward yelled.
"Plenoptic!" Blaze muttered.

...

"Reload Crew."

FUCK.
Not only had The Reload Crew already won a prize, PlenOptiC's song was so blatantly the best (and I guess the whole audience agreed), they could have done with the recording session prize (which was wasted as The Reload Crew already had won a recording session!), plus - as we have ascertained - they sucked!
The 'winners' performed, only Vince had had to be carried home, because he had collapsed from drugs something uncertain, so The Young Ecuadorians couldn't perform again (dammit). We tried to ignore The Reload Crew's 'encore performance' and tide ourselves over till Zebras Bring Death.

No PlenOptiC prize, then.
Shows just how unfair the music industry can be sometimes, doesn't it.
