PART #2
Boudreau pulled onto the driveway of the Deverall home. Hopping out of the car, he bounded up the sidewalk to the house. When he rang the doorbell, a butler came to the door; and invited him inside. Boudreau was taken to the parlor; and the butler went to inform Miss Lucia of his arrival.
Boudreau waited for what appeared to be a long time. Finally he was pacing around the room looking at the various objects of art. As he walked by the door to the hall, he glanced toward the stairway, and saw Lucia descending the stairs. She was wearing a long ballroom gown made of lavender chiffon. Her blond hair was swept up to the top of her head, and there were sparkling jewels woven throughout the top of her hair. She carried herself with a grace few women ever possess. Lucia had spent four years at a women’s college out east that had trained her in the social graces of the day.
Boudreau caught his breath as he watched her floating down the stairs. She had seen him watching her, and knew how to make a grand entry. She swished her dress from side to side, lifted her head to give a regal appearance, waved her hand slightly, and gave a smile. She carried herself like royalty, and was proud of it.
Lucia’s father came out of his study, and watched his daughter descending the stairs. He observed Boudreau as he stood in the parlor door watching her. He walked over to Boudreau; and said, “Boudreau, tell me, where on God’s green earth have you ever seen a woman like my daughter? I hope you recognize the quality of this daughter of mine.” Boudreau smiled; and said, “Mr. Deverall, Lucia, without a doubt, is quite lovely.” Hollingsworth Deverall placed his large hand upon Boudreau’s shoulder; and said, “I would kill the man who would hurt my little girl.” Boudreau stepped back; and said, “I have no doubt of that Sir.”
Lucia walked across the floor; and said to her father, “Daddy, are you trying to scare Boudreau to death?” Hollingsworth chomped on the end of his cigar; and said, “Daughter, a little scare doesn’t hurt anyone, especially a young man who is courting my little girl.” Lucia said, “Daddy, you had better take another look at your little girl. I am no longer a little girl.” Hollingsworth took the cigar out of his mouth; and said, “You are right, you are no longer a little girl. I just wanted to make sure this young “whippersnapper” behaves himself when he is out with you.”
Boudreau said, “Mr. Deverall, you can be assured I will behave myself with your daughter.” Lucia handed Boudreau her wrap which he placed around her shoulders; and they walked towards the door. Lucia’s father called out, “Boudreau, you best remember what I said, you hear?” Boudreau looked back toward the large man; and said, “Yes Sir, I will remember what you said.”
Boudreau and Lucia walked out to the car arm in arm. He opened the door for Lucia, than he carefully tucked all the chiffon from her long gown inside the door before closing it. Walking around to the other side, he got in beside her; and said, “You look very lovely tonight Lucia. I have some flowers for you, and he handed her a corsage.” She took it from him; and said, “I will pin this on my dress when we get to the Harvest Ball.”
Boudreau started the car; and they drove towards the Country Club. The fragrance of her perfume was filling the car; and Boudreau was finding it intoxicating. He had never smelled a fragrance that seemed so powerful before. It reminded him of her family members for each one in their own right represented a powerful person. Hollingsworth Deverall was highly respected in Lake Charles; and his wife Priscilla was known throughout the area as a philanthropist. She was highly sought by political parties and hospital guilds. Whenever there was a financial need, Priscilla’s favors were sought. Priscilla was wealthy in her own right for she was the daughter of a famous lumber magnate named Leopold King.
When the couple reached the Country Club, Boudreau pulled up to the front, and was greeted by a young man who took the car, and parked it for him. Lucia picked up her corsage, and took Boudreau’s arm as they walked into the Country Club. Many heads turned when the couple walked onto the dance floor. There were many whispers about the striking looks of the couple. Lucia was well trained at ballroom dancing, and Boudreau was an expert. He had spent a great deal of his adult life on the dance floor. When people watched them dance, they began to step back; and soon the floor was cleared except for Lucia and Boudreau. Lucia realized they were the only dancers; and she was not going to miss a chance to perform for the crowd. Of course, that was incentive for Boudreau; and they awed the crowd.
