PART #3
Jean Baptiste happened to be in the crowd of people watching Boudreau and Lucia dance. He realized how much Boudreau was enjoying all the attention coming from the crowd. He observed his countenance changing, and saw the excitement on his face. At times, Jean Baptiste found it difficult not to be jealous of Boudreau. He had it all; good looks, charm, and ladies falling all over themselves at his feet. There was never a problem with money, and now he had the richest and most beautiful girl in all of Lake Charles on his arm. Somehow it was a little disgusting to Jean Baptiste.
He felt a tap on his arm; and he turned around to see Katerina standing there. How lovely she looked. “Hello Jean Baptiste,” she said. With color flowing into his cheeks, he said, “Hello Katerina, where is your date?” She looked miserable as she answered, “He’s drunk. I told him to go out to the car, and sleep it off.” Jean Baptiste asked, “Would you like to dance?” She answered, “Yes, I would like that very much; that is the reason I came tonight.”
Jean Baptiste led her out onto the dance floor; and they began to dance a slow dance. Other people from the crowd were joining them on the floor for the next dance. Jean Baptiste noticed that Boudreau was watching him, and had a quizzical expression on his face. It didn’t matter to him what Boudreau thought; he could tell him later what had happened to Katerina’s date. Now he was going to dance with Katerina.
Jean Baptiste said, “Katerina, what do you see in that young man? He is only going to break your heart.” Katerina looking up at Jean Baptiste, smiled wisely for her age; and said, “Jean Baptiste not all men are as good as you happen to be.” He laughed; and said, “I’m not so sure I would say I am so good. I have my moments too.” “You would never do what he has done tonight, Jean Baptiste, you know you wouldn’t,” she remarked. “I know I would never leave the side a lovely young lady like you on the biggest night of the year. I would be fearful some fellow would snatch her away from me.”
Boudreau looked around for Pierre Cummings, and could find him nowhere in the crowd. Finally he could stand the suspense no longer. He walked over to the couple and tapped Jean Baptiste on the shoulder, and asked if he could dance with his sister. Reluctantly Jean Baptiste bowed, and stepped back where Lucia was standing. He offered to dance with Lucia, but she politely refused saying, “I am a little tired, but thank you for asking.” Jean Baptiste knew he did not measure up to what Lucia had in mind for a dance partner. He was really glad she had refused for he did not care for the woman. She was like a seashell; beautiful on the outside, but empty inside. He could not understand why Boudreau was so taken with this shell of a woman. He watched Boudreau and Katerina dancing together, and guessed that Boudreau was quizzing Katerina about her date.
When the dance was finished, Katerina walked over to Jean Baptiste; and Boudreau returned to Lucia’s side. Jean Baptiste asked, “Boudreau was asking about your date wasn’t he?” Katerina said, “Yes, how did you guess?” “Oh, I know Boudreau pretty well,” he said. “He told me he would go out, and get him if I wanted him to,” said Katerina. “Surely you didn’t tell him to go get the drunken sot, did you?” asked Jean Baptiste. She laughed, “No I told him to let him rot in that car as far as I was concerned.” “That’s my girl,” said Jean Baptiste.
Katerina said, “I am not even going out to check on him. He can just sleep it off in the car. If he wants to behave like an absolute fool, then that is his decision.” Jean Baptiste asked, “Do you want me to take you home when this is over?” “Would you do that; I would be so appreciative,” she said. “Sure, it would be my pleasure,” he remarked.
At the stroke of midnight the announcer called for silence; and said, “We are now going to crown our King and Queen of the Fall Harvest Ball. Our judges have made a decision. This decision is based upon the dance performance and overall appearance of the couple.” He asked for a drum-roll, and then he announced, “Our King and Queen of the Fall Harvest Ball are Boudreau LaFaye and Lucia Deverall.”
Jean Baptiste scowled as he watched Boudreau and Lucia basking in the adulation of the people. He wasn’t sure which of the two behaved the worst. He felt that Lucia’s nose was so elevated she almost fell as she walked to the front to receive her crown. Boudreau was shouting and acting like an idiot over winning the honor. He was actually tempted to put his foot out to trip Lucia, but suppressed the temptation. After all, how would that have looked? He smiled inwardly when he thought of the comment that Katerina had made about him being so good. He wondered what she would have thought if she knew of his thought of tripping Lucia as she walked by.
Jean Baptiste whispered to Katerina, “Everyone knows Hollingsworth Deverall pays for the decision on the King and Queen. It’s no surprise that his daughter and her date would receive the honor. This just makes Hollingsworth look better to the people, or at least that’s the way he sees it. If I were Boudreau, I would feel that the honor had been purchased for me to give Lucia more attention. He is being used by the Deveralls, Katerina, and I don’t know if he realizes it.”
Katerina asked, “Do you mind if we leave now?” Jean Baptiste smiled; and said, “I think the timing is perfect. Let me tell Boudreau, and I will be right back.” He walked over to Boudreau; and told him that he and Katerina were leaving. Lucia said, “No problem, I will have Daddy send a car for us.” That was certainly fine with Jean Baptiste; he had seen about enough of Boudreau and Lucia for one evening.
