PART #4

Jean Baptiste and Katerina walked out of the Country Club; and he asked the parking attendant to bring their car to the door. The young man took the numbered card from Jean Baptiste, and ran to the parking lot to get his car. While they were waiting for the car, Pierre Cummings was trying to make his way to the door. He saw Katerina with Jean Baptiste; and said, “Hey, what are you doing with my girl?” He was slurring his words, and walking unsteadily. Jean Baptiste stepped in front of Katerina; and said, “Look Cummings, you need to find someone to take you home. There is no way I am going to allow Katerina to go with you in your drunken state.” Pierre reached for Katerina’s arm; and she backed away. She said, “Pierre, Jean Baptiste is taking me home.” Pierre lunged for Jean Baptiste as he stepped back towards Katerina. When Jean Baptiste backed away, Pierre stumbled and fell on the sidewalk. Blood was pouring from his nose. By that time the parking attendant had returned with Jean Baptiste’s car. When he hopped out of the car, Jean Baptiste said, “Would you call someone to take this young man home. He is drunk, and has fallen, and hurt himself. I am taking this young lady home.”

The young man said, “Sure, I will take care of it.” Jean Baptiste took Katerina’s arm; and they got into the car, and drove away. Katerina said, “I probably should not have left him there by himself.” Jean Baptiste said, “Listen Katerina, there is no way I would have allowed you to get into a car with that young man in his intoxicated state.”

Jean Baptiste drove Katerina out to the Le Bleu plantation, and then walked her to the door. The home brought back so many memories. He had spent about as much time here, as a child, as he had in his own home. He had known Boudreau all his life, and couldn’t understand what had happened to him over the last few years. He was the only one of Bow and Catherine’s four children who was so wrapped up in money and power. Jean Baptiste thought he would sell his soul to the devil if there were money to be made on the deal.

Katerina invited Jean Baptiste to come inside, and have some dessert and coffee. She said, “Do you remember Manobo and his wonderful chicory coffee?” Jean Baptiste said, “I remember how your father loved his coffee.” “Daddy insisted that Manobo teach me how to make that coffee, so I make it all the time for him now,” she said. “I would be happy to make a pot if you would like some to drink.” Jean Baptiste was not too fond of coffee, but he would drink it to be able to spend more time with Katerina. “Sure, I would love some coffee,” he said.

While Katerina was making the coffee, Roxy, the fox hound came into the kitchen and rubbed against Jean Baptiste. “Roxy remembers you,” Katerina said. “She should remember me,” said John Baptiste. “I was the one who found her for your brother. I thought he would like to take up hunting; but I was wrong on that one.” Katerina said, “No, Boudreau never took to hunting, but Horace, my younger brother, is an avid hunter.” “Does he take Roxy with him?” asked Jean Baptiste.
“No, it’s funny she won’t go with anyone but Boudreau. She is certainly a one-person dog.”

Jean Baptiste reached down to pet Roxy, and got down on his knee to talk to her. “If you were my dog, I would take you hunting. I know you would love to run out in the woods.” The dog whined, and rubbed her nose against Jean Baptiste’s leg.

Katerina was spooning out some black bottom cake for Jean Baptiste when she heard her mother call out, “Katerina, is that you in the kitchen?” “Yes, Mama, it is me,” Katerina called back. “Are you all right?” asked Catherine. “Yes Mama, I am here with Jean Baptiste, and we’re having some of your black bottom cake.” Catherine called out, “Hello Jean Baptiste, enjoy the cake.” He laughed and said, “I certainly will Mrs. La Faye.”

Catherine walked back to the bedroom where Bow was curled up in bed. He turned over, stretched, and yawned. “Catherine, what are you doing?” he asked. “I heard some noise from the kitchen, and thought I would check it out,” she said. “Who is in the kitchen; surely not Boudreau?” No, dear, it is Katerina, and she is with Jean Baptiste,” said Catherine. Bow said, “I thought she went out with that Cummings boy.” “Well she is with Jean Baptiste now,” smiled Catherine. “Wouldn’t they make a lovely couple?” Bow laughed, “Catherine, you never give up trying to make marital matches for your children, do you?” “I just want them to be happy,” she said. “Perhaps the best way is for them to decide who and when they will marry,” he laughed.

To be continued...
