PART #56
Catherine went back to the room with the children and their mothers. She said, “I’m closing this door, and I don’t want anyone to leave this room. Children, I want you to stay on the floor. Do not stand at any windows. Do you understand? The mothers said, “We will keep them away from the windows Miss Catherine.” Marguerite asked, “Catherine, what are you going to do?” Catherine said, “I am going to stand at the window at the back of the house facing towards the woods. Bow felt the pirates would try to come into the house from that direction.” Marguerite handed Jean Baptiste to one of the other mothers; and said, “Catherine, I am going to come with you, and help you watch.”
Both Marguerite and Catherine took positions at the window overlooking the area behind the back of the house. Marguerite asked, “Do you have any other guns? I can handle a gun pretty well. Catherine said, “Why don’t you tell Manobo you can handle a gun, and see if he can tell you where to find one. Be careful as you pass those open windows.”
Marguerite quickly found Manobo, and told him that Catherine had sent her for another gun. She asked him if he could direct her to the place where a gun and some shells were kept. He told her to go downstairs to the office, and she would find a gun cabinet inside on the left. She could get the gun and shells out of that cabinet. Marguerite ran down the stairs, and said, “Bow, I came after a gun and some shells. Could you direct me to the office where there is a gun cabinet?”
Bow said, “Is the gun for Catherine?” She answered, “No, it is for me; don’t worry I know how to use a gun, and I have a debt to settle with these people.” Bow said, “Marguerite, I don’t want you to do anything foolish.” She said, “I have no intention of doing anything foolish; I have a son to raise.” She got two guns and some shells, and started up the stairs. When she returned to the area where Catherine was positioned at the window; she asked, “Have you seen anyone Catherine?”
Catherine was intent upon watching outside. Without turning towards Marguerite, Catherine said, “I haven’t seen anyone, but I know they are out there. They are just waiting for an opportune time to come in. I wonder if they are waiting on something in particular as a signal.”
Catherine saw a man on a horse with a burning torch in his hand racing toward the back of the house. She knew instinctively he was going to torch the house. She pointed the gun, and pulled the trigger. The man fell from the horse to the ground, and was still. Marguerite said, “Good shot, Catherine, but here comes another man with a torch.” Marguerite pointed the gun toward the rider, pulled the trigger, and the second man dropped from his horse. Catherine said, “You’re not such a bad shot yourself.”
After the two men had been shot, there was a lull. Catherine felt they were rethinking their strategy. She turned to Marguerite; and said, “They’ll be back, so stay alert.” Ten minutes passed; and everything was quiet. There was an eerie silence throughout the house. It seemed incredible the children were keeping so quiet. Catherine was getting pretty nervous wondering what was going to happen.
Suddenly there were gunshots from the front of the house. The Doucettes must have moved their men to the front, when they found there was firepower at the back. Catherine said, “Marguerite, you stay here, and try to keep back from the window as much as possible. I will move to the window facing the other side of the house. If you need me, call my name.”
Catherine took her gun and a box of shells to the other side of the house, and positioned herself at a window. As she stood there, she carefully scanned the darkness. She was glad for a full moon that was coming up. When someone moved, she could make out an outline. As long as she could see an outline, Catherine knew she could drop the person. She stood silently watching; then she saw some of the men moving towards the house, but staying close to the ground. She aimed and fired. She heard someone give a blood curdling scream. “Good, I hit that one,” she thought. She wondered if the men downstairs could see as well as she could from her position.
She heard shots coming from Manobo. “They must be circling the house, and drawing closer,” she thought. She could hear Manobo cursing as he fired the gun. She could also hear Marguerite calling for her. She ran back across the upper floor to where Marguerite was standing at the window. She said, “Catherine, there are at least five men out there.” Catherine said, “Where are all these men coming from?” Marguerite said, “They know we are up here, and they are being careful about moving.” Catherine said, “We’ll just have to outsmart them. The next time you see them moving closer, don’t fire. Maybe they will think we have moved from our position. If they believe that, perhaps they will get careless; and then we will pick them off.”
To be continued...
