PART #57

Catherine had suggested she and Marguerite try to outsmart the men below who were attempting to get into the house. If they stopped firing towards them, they might think they had left their position at the window. Marguerite said, “You are not only a good shot, you are a good thinker.” Catherine said, “Get ready now; and don’t panic when you see them moving closer. I will tell you when to fire. Aim for the ones to the left and towards the center. I will aim for those on the right and towards the center.”

The two women waited for the move. Everything seemed quiet below, and then Catherine saw one person moving forward. Soon another man moved closer, and yet another. When nothing happened five men stood up, and were moving fast toward the house. Catherine said, “Marguerite start firing.” Both women stood with their Spencer repeating rifles firing out the windows, and all five men were shot as they ran toward the house.”

Catherine turned toward Marguerite and asked, “Where did you learn to shoot a gun like that?” Marguerite said, “I grew up with six brothers, and every brother was a crack shot. I didn’t want to be outdone by six brothers, so I learned to handle a gun myself.” “Where did you learn to shoot Catherine?” asked Marguerite. “My father took me with him when he hunted wild game.” Marguerite said, “You learned well.”

The women could hear shooting coming from the front of the house, so Catherine told Marguerite to remain at her position. She would go to the other side of the house, and see what was happening. When she reached the other side of the house, she looked down into the front yard; and saw some people approaching the house. She heard someone yell, “Hold your fire, this is Sheriff LeHavre. We have the Doucettes. Open the door.” She heard Manobo run across the hall, and stand at the top of the stairs with his gun pointed toward the door. She thought to herself, “He’s not taking any chances.”

Bow and some of the men pointed their guns toward the door, and one of the men yelled out, “How many are there with you?” Sheriff LeHavre said, “There are four deputies and the two Doucettes.” Bow walked over to the door, and opened it. Deputy Crenshaw stood with Michelle, whose hands were tied behind her back. Sheriff LeHavre stood with her brother, Salvadore, who had been shot; and was now moaning in pain.

Bow said, “Bring them inside; I would like to ask them some questions.” The sheriff and deputies entered the house, where the Doucettes were seated and tied to chairs. Bow said, “Michelle, why did you stop by the Plantation yesterday?” Michelle refused to answer. Bow said, “I see your brother needs medical attention; if you would like to see him receive that attention, I suggest you talk. Otherwise we can let him bleed to death.”

Michelle said, “We stopped to see Joshua; we told you that yesterday.” “That’s right, you did tell me that,” said Bow. “What did you do after you left here?” Michelle smirked, “I shot myself a rat.” Bow replied, “Why did you shoot yourself a rat?” Michelle answered, “What else are you going to do with a rat?” “Did that rat have a name?” asked Bow. Again, Michelle refused to answer. Her brother, Salvadore, moaned; and his head fell forward on his chest. For the first time Michelle looked concerned. She looked up at Bow; and said, “Get my brother some help.” Bow said, “I told you we would take care of that when you answer some questions.”

Michelle said, “All right, I shot Jean Pierre Boudreau.” “Why did you shoot him?” asked Bow. “I shot him because he wanted to go off on his own.” “Didn’t you shoot him so he wouldn’t talk about your operation?” asked Bow. “Didn’t you tell him he knew too much to live?” Michelle raised her eyes and asked, “How do you know so much about this?” Bow said, “I know because he came back to the plantation, and told me everything.” “Are you telling me that rat is still alive?” asked Michelle. Bow said, “He died after he told me about you.” “One more question,” said Bow. “I want to know what tipped you off when you came to the plantation yesterday.” Michelle answered, “We had set a date and time we were to meet Joshua here at the plantation. When we came and found he wasn’t here, we knew something had to be wrong. He had told us he would let us know if that time didn’t work out for him. Since we had heard nothing from him, we figured something had happened to him. We thought perhaps you had done something to him.”

To be continued...
