The King is Coming
One day in the month of July
a startling announcement was made
“Prepare for an important guest
a royal visit will be paid.”
Owl gathered all the animals
together at the large oak tree
to tell them the wonderful news
“Oooh, that is wonderful,” said Bea.
“Who is this guest of royalty?”
Benji, the bear, wanted to know
“Is he coming for residence
or stay for awhile, and than go?”
Owl tapped his wingtips upon the tree,
cleared his throat, and cheerfully said,
“My good friend, Lion Heart McBane
is coming, and will need a bed.”
Rufus the large bumblebee asked,
“B-z-z-z, what were the words he did say?”
Benji said, “The King is coming;
he needs a place in which to stay.”
Owl said, “I am sorry to say
my house is too high and too small;”
Rufus quietly said, “Friends, my home
certainly will not do at all.”
Lenny looked around the circle
and gave his friends a cunning smile;
“What if Lion Heart had to stay
at the rabbit’s house for awhile?”
Owl turning to the rabbit asked,
“Would a stay be all right with you?”
“Yes, of course he shall be welcome
I’ve a lovely room with a view.”
Some interesting months had passed
since Owl had talked with the proud hare;
He had certainly done his part
showing the animals his care.
He had stopped hopping down the road
singing the “Bunny Song” off-key;
No longer was his whole life spent
focusing on “Little Ole Me.”
He kindly reached out to others
thinking of their personal needs;
When Owl wasn’t feeling so well
Yakutakay pulled all his weeds.
He kept Owl’s flower garden so clean
many animals did proclaim;
“Yakutakay has really changed
he’s living up to his new name.”
When Benji’s large old honey pot
was crushed, and broken on the ground;
Yakutakay looked everywhere
for a honey pot to be found.
All the animals were so proud
of the change in Yakutakay;
He had a special bunny bounce
as he hopped merrily each day.
“The King is coming to see us;
now what shall we do to prepare?”
“All forest animals,” said Owl
“should take the good news and share.”
“Tell everyone to be ready
as he comes through the forest gate;
There will be a bountiful feast
and no one is to arrive late.”
“Remember the gate will be closed
when his chariot comes inside;
The bountiful feast will begin
and with the King we shall abide.”
So the animals took the news
to all the forest friends they knew;
Benji, the bear, knocked on the door
of his best friend, Hairy Old Bleu.
“Hairy, my friend, will you please come,
a lovely feast we will prepare;
The King’s coming to the forest
this joy with you, we’d like to share.”
Lenny went to see Wolfy Two,
“Wolfy Two we want you to come;
You may bring a friend if you like;
how about Genesa Wolfstrum?”
“Please do not be late when you come,
at eight o’clock they close the gate;
Know if you happen to be late
it won’t be possible to wait.”
The animals worked very hard
preparing for the sumptuous feast;
They baked many tasty goodies
finally all the work was ceased.
“It’s time for the King to arrive
he’s coming in his chariot;
Look, it is covered with fine gold
and pulled by Horse Iscariot.”
The trumpet was loudly blowing
all the animals were shouting;
“The King is coming, see his face
he is coming, there’s no doubting.”
The animals crowded in close
to see his majesty, the King;
“He has come as he has promised,”
Praises to his name they did sing.
The chariot stopped at the oak tree
to let his majesty step down;
He and Owl approached a large stage
from the platform they both looked down.
The King greeted the animals
and asked them to please be quiet;
He had something he’d like to say
and he did not want a riot.
Owl did tap on the podium
The King spoke in a grand deep voice;
“Someone shall be honored today
This should cause all to rejoice.”
“Yakutakay, come to the stage,”
Was the King now calling his name?
this surely could not be real,
Was the King playing a strange game?
“Yakutakay, did you hear me call,
Can you not move those rabbit feet?”
With a deep voice, he called again
“Yakutakay, come; leave your seat.”
Yakutakay hopped to the stage
and humbly stood before the King;
“I give you a medal of honor,
your change of heart is the real thing.”
“Wear this medal with my blessing,
you were an ostentatious hare;
but there has been a change in you
Now you are a rabbit who cares.”
Everyone cheered; some shed big tears
What a good day for large and small;
They learned you can have a changed heart,
It can happen to one and all.
